Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Recovering Data - Power Bump ate my DNS-323

Some storms came thru last night and my DNS-323 saw a couple of power bumps before I was able
to unplug it. Powered it up today and the web interface is asking me to format the drives : (

I was running raid 1. Is there anyway to recover?

Remove the drives connect them - one by one - to a PC either running linux or running Windows with the ext2ifs installable file system driver - you might be lucky, you only need to get one to read.

Next time - back it up - and consider getting a UPS

1. Are your drives fun_plugged?

2. Are you able to access the drives from your PC when the DNS is on (before going to the web interface)?

3. When you go to the web interface and it tells you it wants to format, it there a skip option?

Re: Recovering Data - Power Bump ate my DNS-323

An observation and just a little puzzled (and no expert).
My DNS-323 is connected through a transformer supplied with the unit.
This takes the mains at 240 volts AC down to much lower DC supply to the DNS323 - typically 12 v and 5 v.
I would guess all units are all the same with corresponding transformers for local voltage.
I'm just surprised that the transformer did not get hit - taking out the voltage regulators and similar or it was fried fried.
Maybe you now have an unregulated power supply as part of the problem.

Just a thought - Biscotte

Re: Recovering Data - Power Bump ate my DNS-323

Biscotte - there is no transformer in there, that's what is known as a switch mode power supply - it's much more efficient than the older transformer style supplies, and it is regulated.  Also, I would not expect the power supplies to be different - they can accomodate input from 100~240V, it would only be necessary to supply line cords to match the local outlets.

It's my guess - based on the content of the original post that the file structure on the drives has been corrupted (which can happen quite easily if power is removed in the middle of a disk write) rather than the drives themselves or the unit being damaged.

If the original poster is lucky the partition containing the data may be intact, he only needs one of the partitions on the two drives, and he may be able to recover the data.
