What's the best way to upgrade HDD for dns323???

I am using RAID1 for my dns323 box.

I already got 2 piece of new 500GB hdd to replace the current 320GB drives.

What is the best and easiest way to upgrade?? In the upgrade process, I will also upgrade to latest firmware 1.05.

Old : 2 x 320GB RAID1

New : 2 x 500GB RAID1

What is the best way to upgrade without losing data on my current 95% full 320GB?

Thanks.

Re: What's the best way to upgrade HDD for dns323???

There's really only one way to do it - backup the data - create a new array and then restore the data.

Now if you're a linux guru (and if you were, I don't think you be asking this question) you could probably, remove one 320GB drive and replace it with a 500GB, telnet into the unit format the drive, copy the data over, remove the other 320GB drive, replace it with the other 500GB drive, and then run mdadm and recreate the RAID array - and maybe, someone here can tell you how to do all that, step by step, - but - are you confident that you could make it happen?  Are you willing to risk the data?

In theory and again in you're familiar with linux, you could remove both 320GB drives, install the 500GB ones, create a RAID1 array, connect a 320GB to the USB port and transfer the files that way - something which I plan to try soon - but again are you willing to risk the data?

And whilst I'm about it - I'll bet (from the wording of your question) that you don't have it backed up - so I'd guess - you are willing to risk it.

Go for broke man, what have you got to lose?

Re: What's the best way to upgrade HDD for dns323???

Hmm.....so I can still access the partition when only 1 drive is plugged??

If yes then I could plug both new 500gb drive and create RAID1, upgrade firmware, install all the fun_plugs and play around with it a little before moving back the data.

When I am ready, plug one of the old 320GB into my windows xp system (install some ext2/3 drivers) and move the data back into the new 500GB RAID1?

Also, I would actually want to try installing BackupNetClone instead of RAID1 but too bad the tutorial is not complete yet. http://backupnetclone.sourceforge.net/installation.html

Yes - you can still access the partition when only one drive is plugged (in) - that's the whole concept of RAID1, when a drive fails, the data should still remain accessible, and yes, you could plug one of those drives into your XP system and use ext2ifs and get access to the data and copy it back.

BTW, the tutorial is not complete, but the instructions are still there as notes in a couple of text files.  Look at the end of the instructions 2a and the beginning of 2b, and it might be all you need depending on how familiar you are with Linux.  Also you can always send me email--I have a transcript of someone who went through all my notes step-by-step and asked very detailed questions.  If I weren't so lazy (hey, I have a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old--maybe I'm just busy...), I'd just post that transcript up on the website.  smile
