Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

So I'm thinking of purchasing the DNS-323 and heard that the Raid1 functionality does not work.  Is this true?

I read the wiki and saw a note about the restore but was wondering if this was in fact working.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

RAID 1 has been working fine for me for about 1.5 years.

However, there have been several reports of amber/pink/orange LEDs
warning of degraded RAID function, where the users believe the warning
LEDs to be erroneous.

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

That's what I had heard, that newer firmware now shows RAID 1 not working.  This is one of the major points of me getting a device like this...

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

dude, please read properly. The RAID1 issues only happened when people upgraded from firmware 1.03 to 1.04/1.05. If you just start with 1.05 then it works fine. At least for me.

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

As far as I'm concerned, the RAID1 functionality has worked on all the firmware revisions I've used 1.02b/1.03/1.04/1.05

dubbin - perhaps you could post your specific concerns and we can try to address those.

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

dubbin...   I also agree that the Raid 1 functionality works fine.  On 1.03, and 1.04 (haven't updated yet to 1.05).  But fordem's signature says it all...

Most people assume that Raid 1 means data redundancy....  but its not.  As long as you go in with that expectation, it works like it should.

in another words, RAID1 is protection against HDD failure. If one fails your data will be intact.

Over 1/2 purchases made thru Newegg talked about RAID 1 not working with current firmware.   I'll believe this forum over that anyday, just telling you what I've 'read properly'.

Thanks for all the help people, I'm ordering mine today.

Re: Purchasing DNS-323 - Question

I've got 2 units, one with Hardware A1 and one with Hardware B1 (which is what you will probably get).  I've use 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, and 1.05 firmware.  From what I have seen so far, most of the RADI 1 issues have been determined to be operator error.  I've used RAID 1 and standard on both units and have never had any issue under any of the firmwares.

I have also manually built and removed RAID 1 arrays using mdadm on the DNS with no data loss.  The biggest thing to keep in mind is not to rely on RAID as a backup method or you will be burned.  This unit is a great unit that can be made quite powerful with some help from this forum.
