Hi, I just had a failed DNS-323 firmware flash. I tried to flash the 1.05 firmware onto a DNS-323 that already had 1.04. All important data is backed up, so no panic there.
The device was in Standard mode with one hard drive.
After about 15 minutes into the flash, the device turned itself off. When I powered it back on, the main power LED flashed continuously. Then the network activity LED would flash once before the power LED resumed the flashing. This cycle would repeat itself again and again.
I have already tried holding the reset button with and without the hard drive in the DNS-323.
Does anybody have any other suggestions to try before I contact DLink and ask for an RMA?
Thanks.

Update: I guess I'm really hosed as nobody has any suggestions. ![]()
Although all important data is backed up, I have quite a few large files (OS images, installation files, etc) that I'd rather not re-download. So I connected the hard drive to the a Vista PC and used the ext2 driver here to access the data: http://www.fs-driver.org/download.html.
It's nice that D-Link's tech support is 24/7, and I was able to obtain an RMA pretty easily. They also provide cross-shipping, but I chose the standard method just in case I am able to revive the unit within a couple of days. (It looks unlikely now.)

I actually started to reply earlier - but had to go answer a service call.
If you have a serial cable, which would theoretically allow you console access, you might be able to see where it loops, but I'm not sure that you could fix it, without console access - there's not much you can do.

Update: received the replacement last week. The RMA process went fairly smoothly.
The replacement is a brand-new drive, hardware rev. A1 and firmware 1.03. This was a bit concerning as the original one was a rev. B1.
Had another firmware upgrade scare as the DNS-323 tried to load the "firmware upgrade successfully" page but only came up empty. Hit reload, and the page showed up. Restarted the NAS, and I have 1.05 now.
Everything seems to perform identically except that the power consumption is a little worse--8W spun down and 11W idle, consistently 2W more compared to my first unit. I wonder whether this is a sample variance or a difference between rev A1 and B1. It seems that I need to pay a whopping US$2 every year to compensate for the difference.
(I've calculated that based on my current electricity costs, every watt, if in a 24/7 device, translates to roughly $1 annually).

Look on the bright side - you're probably not paying as much as some of us - I'm at USD $0.41/kwh and that is about to increase - you're getting it for what - $0.11/kwh?

About $0.12 is my calculation. We are facing an increase soon, I believe.
On the bright side, I've successfully commandeered part of the existing telephone wiring in my house for a gigabit Ethernet network. As the result, I'm retiring at least one wireless bridge, which will more than compensate the DNS-323 power increase. ![]()
