Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

DNS-323 Newbie questions about fun_plug, nfs, llink, etc ....

Hi all,

I have a DNS-323 being delivered (along with a new Samsung Spinpoint 500GB HDD) tomorrow to replace a 'dying' MyBook 500GB.

The plan is to backup the data from the MyBook onto the new Samsung and then add the MyBook's HDD into the DNS-323. Obviously this means the Samsung needs to be put in the DNS before doing the backup. As it is the only other HDD I have, I will need to setup the DNS in "Standard" mode (if I don't want to lose the data when I add the MyBook HDD).

So my questions are:

1) Does the stuff like fun_plug, nfs, llink still work with on a DNS-323 running in Standard mode ?

2) Should I upgrade to the latest D-Link firmware BEFORE installing fun_plug or do I not need to ?

3) When I look at the MyBook HDD under WinXP it appears to have about 4/5 'volumes' (presumably partitions). When I put this into the DNS-323 will it be formatted as 1 big 500GB or will it still the partitions on it ?

4) If I've got to run the DNS in Standard mode, the plan would be to use volume_1 for standard data and volume_2 for the 'media server'. Is it possible to install llink one one of the volumes but not the other ?

TIA for any help given to an obvious newbie.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

Re: DNS-323 Newbie questions about fun_plug, nfs, llink, etc ....

1) yes
2) I would upgrade before ever putting in your first hard drive
3) 1 big one (actually 2-3 depending on what firmware, but the other 2 are small and 1 is used for swap space, and another for config files)
4) I don't know how the media server works.

Thanks for the help.

So it would be (i) power up the DNS-323 (ii) upgrade the firmware (iii) put in the first drive and (iv) install fun_plug, etc ?

On the subject of starting with 1 HDD, I get the impression that it is important to put it in the correct slot ie with just one drive it needs to go in the right hand slot (when the DNS is viewed from the back presumably). Is that correct ?

I don't mean the uPnP AV stuff. Basically I would want to set it up so that one volume is a sort of backup drive (used by my WinXP PC) and the other volume simply contains media files which would be streamed, ideally via llink over NFS, to a Popcorn Hour. I assume that is perfectly possible ?

Re: DNS-323 Newbie questions about fun_plug, nfs, llink, etc ....

Yes, the OS for the DNS runs from a ramdisk created by the softwar on the flash.  You can access the web set-up utility without disks in.  As far as slots, you want to put your single disk in the right hand slot when facing the unit.  For a single disk it really does not matter, but when you add a second disk, the right slot will become the first drive and the left the second.

Yes, you can set-up individual shares or multiple shares to each disk and even to subdirectories on each disk if you want.  As far as NFS and Popcorn Hour, I have not messed around with either, but do a search of the forum for info.

Just in case - early firmware versions (pre 1.03) did not allow a firmware upgrade if there was no hard drive - so - whilst I don't think it should happen, if you get a unit with an early firmware version, just put the drive in, format it, upgrade the firmware, reformat the drive and then proceed.

Re: DNS-323 Newbie questions about fun_plug, nfs, llink, etc ....

If you use llink, then you won't be using NFS -- llink uses HTTP-based streaming.  I'm using Llink with my iStar Mini and it works great.  I only wish that someone can compile Llink for funplug 0.5, so that I can upgrade and run the newest version of transmission.

moquilok - just to confirm that you're using llink as described here with the latest version of funplug prior to 0.5 ?

Yes, that's the version of llink that I'm running, and I'm using funplug 0.4.

Re: DNS-323 Newbie questions about fun_plug, nfs, llink, etc ....

Thanks for all the help people - and very fast it was too. I will probably be making a lot of use of this Wiki and forum from now on.

The DNS-323 turned up this morning and it is currently running 1.04 (after upgrading) and formatting the 1st drive.

From a build perspective, on first impressions I have to say the 323 is a massive step up from the MyBook (but then it is a fairly hefty price increase as well).

I don't think the llink binaries need to be recompiled to use with fun_plug 0.5.
