RAID 1 drive failed, now DNS323 won't resync

Hello,

I had a drive fail in my RAID 1 on my DNS 323.  I replaced the drive with a newer, larger capacity drive and followed these directions:

Q. How do I restore my RAID1 settings if a drive has failed?

A. Note: If a RAID1 drive has failed, the DNS-323 will display the HDD LED light, of the corresponding drive, in Amber.

If this happens, follow these steps to restore the RAID1 settings:

Step 1 Power down the DNS-323

Step 2 Remove the failed drive from the DNS-323

Step 3 Insert the new drive into the DNS-323

Note: The new drive must blank with no partition on the drive

Step 4 Power on the DNS-323

Step 5 After a minute log into the DNS-323 web interface

Step 6 You will be prompt to format and resync on entry, click OK

Note: This action will format the replaced drive only and sync the two hard drives in RAID1

Step 7 Wait for format and resync to complete. The DNS-323 is now ready for use

My problem is that now the dns323 will not resync.  When i first loaded the new drive, it asked me to format and it did successfully.  But when it tries to resync, I have let it sit for 2 days now with the two blue HDD activity lights blinking on it and the webpage always says there is hours to wait but it never happens.  I shutdown the dns323 using the admin webpage let it sit overnight and then restarted it, but still having the same problem.  I had a power outage yesterday and now the dns323 won't even display the admin webpage or allow me to connect to it using windows explorer (or any method for that matter).  I don't know what to do?

Re: RAID 1 drive failed, now DNS323 won't resync

Well - I hope you had a backup or at least backed it up whilst you could.

I think this is the point at which you may have to hit the reset button and start afresh.

First - a couple of questions though - you say it's not displaying the admin webpage and you can't access it, that could come from a number of causes.

Since you haven't mentioned it, I'm going to assume you have power to the device and the front panel LEDs are doing what they should - if you don't/didn't have it configured for a static ip address (on the DNS-323, not the router/DHCP server) it's possible that a failure of the DHCP server could cause it not to have an ip address and of course a network failure would also cause the device to be unreachable, so let's start there.

Do you have "link" LEDs on both the DNS-323 and the router - if not check the cable between the two and try a different port on the router - if you have link LEDs and you have a static address, try to ping the device, look at the link LEDs as you ping it, they should flash, even if you don't get a response.  If you don't have a static address, power the DNS-323 off and back on and check the router's connected device list to see if you can find it - it may just be at a different dynamic address.

Hi and thank you very much for the reply.  Let me add some more detail.....

First, i'm now able to access the admin page, it must have been a network issue but since i've rebooted my router i'm able to again access the dns323.

Second, i CAN still access all my data on the drive that did not fail.  It is still accessible through windows explorer without issue.  Its just that darn NEW drive won't sync with the existing drive.  The left and right HDD activity lights just blink and blink (simultaneously) for days on end.  Every time i check the admin page, it says the raid is in the process or resycning, but it never does.  it shows there are different amount of hours left each day i check it.  yesterday it said there were 67.3 hrs, today it showed 79hrs, but last week it said 32 hrs.  I just don't know where to go?

Back up the data, reformat the drives and restore.

Well there is another problem then, it dosn't give me the option to format.  As soon as i turn the dns323 on it starts immediatly trying to sync/mirror the drives.

Re: RAID 1 drive failed, now DNS323 won't resync

ok, i got it working.  I had to do what you said and backup my remaining good drive, remove one of the drives, format the remaining drive then reinsert the other drive, format it, then copy over all my data again.  I also updated to the latest firmware.  Thanks fordem.
