Hi folks, I read the known issues and did a forum search for "locked" but didn't see any other threads about this issue.
I have had my DNS-323 for a week or two and have it configured in RAID-1 with two Seagate 7200.10 750 GB drives. I have copied about 400 GB of data over already (mostly backups of my DVDs or rips of rented HD movies for streaming to my Home Theater PC). Things seem to work okay (though I'm surprised how slow it is... it can't even saturate a 1Gbps network link).
But for a couple days now I've been trying to copy a 35.1 GB movie file (*.mkv) from my Windows Vista Premium PC to the DNS-323, and it is failing every time with the following error message:
"An unexpected error is preventing this operation. Make a note of this error code <blah blah blah>.
Error 0x80070021: the process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file."
This happens every time for this one file, after writing about 2 GB of it successfully. I turned off the other PCs on the network to make sure that they weren't opening the file to add to their media lists (e.g. to create a thumbnail of the newly added file). Other than that I'm not sure what would cause this other than an error in the DNS-323's behavior.
Any ideas, suggestions would be very much appreciated,
Thanks,
Nathan

What firmware version is your DNS at?

Oops, should have mentioned that: 1.04!
Thanks,
Nathan
PS: I reset the DNS-323 to factory defaults, then did a reset, to no effect.

i don't suppose you have a win xp machine on your network?
perhaps you wanna try transferring from the xp machine to the 323...
if it works, at least you've narrowed the problem down to vista...

Good suggestion mihar, thanks! And, a strange result:
I turned on the XP machine (my wife's laptop).
Copied the file from Vista to XP machine.
Turned off Vista machine.
Copied file from XP to DNS-323.
Success!
Turned off XP machine.
Turned on Vista machine, deleted file, copied it again from Vista, success!
So, something odd in the file state for that file which was corrected by copying from XP? I have no idea... it's strange to me that it would copy 2 GB before failing. In any case, it's working now.
This thing seems a little flaky. I wonder if I should return it before my 30 day window is up at Newegg... Hmmm.

you intend to return the 323 or your vista premium pc?
either way, the problem does not lie with the 323 and considering that vista came from microsoft, everything they make is flaky...
Trust me, the 323 works fine... It's the vista pc that is the problem...

What's Vista Premium? Do you mean Vista Home Premium? Vista Ultimate?
Anyway, I agree, it is probably a flaw in Vista. I am running Ultimate on one maching and I get errors when moving large amounts of data to the DNS (100 GB in 10,000 files). It's not an error with the DNS, but with reading from the HD in the Vista Machine. I hit retry and voila, it keeps going for 5 more minutes.
It's definately a windows issue.

i dunno... from his first post, he only mentioned vista premium...
i can only assume it's home premium...
i'd rather stick with xp...
if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I've had that problem before too when trying to copy a large file from Vista to DNS-323. It's not an issue with the DNS-323 but rather an issue with Vista. There is a fix available from Microsoft but you'll need to search for it. They will email you the fix. Sorry ... that's all the info I have ... just do some research on the Microsoft site and eventually you'll find it. It's been a while so I can't recall any more information.
