Hi.
Do anyone know which media players that work with DNS-323? I'm looking for a media player and I have looked at Rapsody N35 that should work with it but I get different answers depending on who I ask. I am also curios of other players.
Which ones do you use (if any) and do they work?
My setup:
- Wireless router DIR-635
- DNS-323
- No media player yet. Wireless or with wire doesn't matter

Sonos definitely works with the DNS-323. Since Sonos scans the sharepoint and builds its own internal index, you do not need to run the D-Link iTunes or UPnP services on the DNS-323.

A chipped Xbox with XBMC works like a charm with the DNS-323. No need to add HDD to the Xbox if you have a DNS-323, unless you're a hard-core gamer. And, it's cheep.

Since I'm a newbie to this I have to ask. Can I also play music and watch images using Sonos and Xbox?

An Xbox with Xbmc can do alot and will play almost anything you throw at it, except for DRM protected stuff. It'll play your mp3/ogg/flac/whatever collection, it'll show your familiy pictures in neat slideshows and it'll play whatever movie format you can imagine - including Xvid, DivX, DVD, H.263 etc. Take a look in above link.
Xbmc can be used in 720p but should not be used in higher resolutions, so it's not HD-Ready I'd say.
Xbmc supports CIFS (SMB mount), UPnP and also DAAP (iTunes format). You'll most likely only use CIFS. The on-line manual cover the most.
...and...Xbmc is free but requires some (minimal) technical skills to install, after the chip has been installed in the Xbox. Your 'chipper' can surely install Xbmc for you when modding the box....

Hmmm.... Maybe I should start looking for an Xbox then. My kid has been nagging about one for some time now but since he has PS2 I've told him no. I'll google and read some more about it. Any recommendations regarding resellers in Sweden?

Well, new boxes are hard to find nowadays. I bought mine at El-Giganten a year ago, but I doubt they have them in stock. The chip I installed was bougth at Swemods.com and I soldered it myself. I think they, Swemods, sells complete packages. But I think you can find one at blocket/tradera/EBay.
Please note that I'm talking about the old Xbox and not the 360, and this will most likely not please your kid. 'Hey, dad - why did you by this anchient p.o.s. - you cannot play Halo3 on it!!!'

Thanks Apan for the info. I'll see if I can find one. Doesn't it work with the 360?

No, the 360 is not yet hacked so that it can play homebrew applications. The only hack currently available on the 360 is a DVD-Firmware hack which allows you to play 'backups'. Xbmc is a homebrew application which can only reside on the original Xbox.
Homebrew application = (in this context) application not signed by Microsoft thus not executable on non-chipped units.

Why this one? The DGL-4300 is a far better unit together with the DNS-323 as it has GigaBit Ethernet. From your post, wireless is not a must and with the DIR-635 you can never have better throughput than 12,5Mbyte/s (in theory) and thus, it's not possible to utilize the power of the DNS-323 (~20Mbyte/s).
But; you might have even better equipment than that in your wired set-up. However, the DGL-4300 is a great router and I reach almost 80Mbit throuput from WAN<->LAN.

Well, I just got my D-Link DSM-320RD to work over my network.
It has a DVD player inside and no harddisk so coupled with the DNS-323 it seems like a good pair. It also has 2 card readers.
Can now watch my stuff directly from the DNS without turning on my PC.

I also bought a DSM-320RD but I sent it back 'cause it didn't work. It couldn't play my music nor show my images. That's why I'm searching for a new one.

Well, since I'm new to this I got recommended by D-Link to buy this specific router... Not a good idea as it seems?

It all depends on what you want. If you want good coverage and speed on WiFi, then I guess the Pre-N products are ok. However, almost no one recommends Pre-N today due to incompability reasons. Have fun getting a Netgear pre-N card working with you D-link. Pre in Pre-N means before the standard is set - you're on your own.
I think it's a pity that the majority of the Pre-N WiFi routers only comes with 100Mbit on the LAN side. The only GigaBit enabled Pre-N router I known of is the Netgear WNR854T.
If you don't need great coverage or speed on WiFi, then DGL-4300 is a great choice. It's a 54Mbps router which can be used in 108Mpbs with D-link products. Sure, it's more expensive than the DIR-635 but IMHO cables are better than air.
I really opted for the DGL-4100 (wired router), but that one can barely be found in here Sweden. Now I use the DGL-4300 and the radio is turned off as I have Cat5e all over the place.

Oh - OK. Well I also had my DSM replaced since it could not find the PC client software in the first place. Got the new one though, and solved a lot of problems by connecting through my switch, meaning that communication between PC's, DSM and DNS-323 is no longer "going through" the router, but they can connect directly. Router (Linksys) is still managing firewall, redirecting ftp traffic to the DNS-323 and functioning as DHCP.
Also they (D-Link) released new client software in the mean time :-)
Well it works for me.
