never touch a running system

hey folks,

the dns is running now for quite some months and it was all fine including fun plug 0.3 and fw 1.03.

i´m browsing this forum from time to time and yesterday i liked the idea of upgdating to ffp and fw 1.05.
after updating the fw i was facing the problem with the unicodes and since there is a backup i decided to reformat and rebuild.

and then.....the trouble started. short version :

during reformat the system was telling me that the format process ended due to a harddrive failure. so i pulled out the drives (samsung 500 gb), attached them to a linux box and set them to raw. then i put them back in to the dns and it started to build a new raid1. looked good afterwards since the info screen told me that all was in sync. with the empty raid i copied the fun plug 0.5 onto it and it installed and deleted correctly. strange enough telnet access was not possible. i tried version 0.4 and that worked without any problems. i configured nfs and mt-daapd, restored the data and as was going to bed hours after starting the update everything looked good. this morning the raid told me it is degraded.

so.....i started all over again and now the status is that the format process stops at 94 %. sounds familiar ? yeah.....still looking into it and would be more than happy for any suggestions.

cheers,
jagstang

Re: never touch a running system

though i have browsed this helpful forum for hours now i´m stuck.

i have downgraded to fw 1.04, put in the reformatted drives (using ext2 ifs and windows drive manager). ffp is still not working and after building a raid 1 it resyncs for about 100 minutes and after a reboot it tells me that the raid has been degraded.

my understanding from reading postings from bq41 and others is that a downgrade will do the flash erase for the drives serial numbers.
deleting all 4 partitions on the drives with ext2 ifs shows them in windows as unallocated space with no partition.

basically they should be brandnew to the dns.

am i doing something completely wrong here ?

when i insert only one drive and let it do the reformat it does its job and shows me volume1.

how should i proceed ?

many thanks in advance !
