hd serial numbers in flash

hi there,

can somebody confirm that an upgrade or downgrade of the fw (versions 1.04 and 1.05) erases the hd serial numbers ?

donīt want to deal with the flash directly ;-)

thanks !

Re: hd serial numbers in flash

If you have disks in the unit, yes it does, but imediately replaces them for an ultimate no, it does not.  If you do the up/down grade in F/W without isks, I believe, yes, it does.  Editing the 2 files in the flash, in my opinion, are safer than upgrading or downgrading the F/W.  If you have any kind of network or power interuption during the F/W change, then you are done, game over.  If you only change the 2 files in the flash, they are either changed, or not, not limbo in between.  Below is a method of doing this, and you do not have to reboot.

Code:

mount -t minix /dev/mtdblock0 /sys/mtd1
mount -t minix /dev/mtdblock1 /sys/mtd2
sed -i '3,4 d' /sys/mtd1/hd_magic_num
sed -i '3,4 d' /sys/mtd2/hd_magic_num
umount /sys/mtd[12]

This will erase the 3rd and 4th lines which hold serial numbers.  The first 2 lines can also be changed, this will garentee that the DNS will want to format the drives.  If you know vi, you can vi the files and change them.

Re: hd serial numbers in flash

thanks bq041 for your answer on this.

i have downgraded yesterday to 1.04 without any disks in it and it is working properly now.
still donīt know really what happened during the upgrade from 1.03 to 1.05. it all started with the reformat of the drives which failed after the upgrade.

thanks for this forum and all the help i received !
