so I have searched and found nothing so far (I do remember reading this but I cant find it) can I take the drives out of the 323 and read them in my PC Windows xp for the purpose of writing them to a newer drive in the 323
any help would be great

try the ext2ifs from http://www.fs-driver.org/
working fine at my end and is even giving you the ability to set drives to the raw level in case you experience the 94 % format issue.
though i must admit that i haven´t tried to read/write any drives coming out of the dns.
