Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

I read the posts about the EXT3 problem so I loaded 1T of data from my DSN-323 to my main workstation and tried to reformat the drives to get the EXT2 on them.

I have/had 1.03 of the firmware installed

I initially tried to setup the RAID0 but only got to 94%.  The drive light on the left blinked for a long time and I said F'it and cycled power.  I got the NAS email saying that my hard drive failed. :-(

I then tried to do a JBOD format with the same results :-(

I then tried a individual format and it worked to 100%  The status page indicated that both drives were formatted and working properly.

I then tried to do RAID 0 again, same 94% problem.

I've just downgraded my firmware to 1.02b and am trying the RAID0 option again with the same 94% issue.

Am I the only one seeing this? Do I need to go back to the original firmware?

TIA

Sean

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

At last! Someone is having the same problem as I have. I was beginning to think I was alone in the world...

I originally installed two 500 GB Samsung Springpoint in Raid 1 under fw 1.01 and it worked until I tried the iTunes server. I made a change to the iTunes server it was totally impossible to change, or even view so I decided to upgrade to fw 1.03. After doing that the configuration seemed to chage to two stand alone volumes???

So I decided to reformat, but every time I try to do that with Raid 1 it freezes at 94%.

If I try to reformat with Raid 0 it goes all the way, but after reboot it just throws the Raid configuration page in my face with no way out of it than another reformat :-(

If I try JBOD the discs turn out as two single discs.

I've tried to downgrade to fw 1.02b but no effect.

I've tried to remove all partitions by mounting the drives in a pc and using fdisk before putting them back in the dns-323 to reformat... - No effect!

Is there some configuration still left on the DNS-323 even though a firmware upgrade/downgrade is performed? If so - How can it be removed?

If anyone can help out here, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

Got mine fixed...

1. Took drives out and cleared all partitions by using my SATA->USB adapter on my Vista Ultimate PC
2. Downgraded the NAS to 1.02b firmware
3. Formatted as RAID 0
4. Upgraded to 1.03 firmware (you need to if you work with large files, > 1gig)

Maybe the unit has issues with reformatting a previously NAS-formatted drive?  That's all I can make of it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

I had the same problem when installing two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATAII 250Gb drives. Couldn't format the pair as RAID1 or RAID0. With a single drive in the box, it worked fine. Swap that for the other single drive, it failed at 94% again. I deduced the drive was faulty and RMA'd it to Seagate who have since posted me out another one. When that arrives I'll try adding it to the existing drive and let you know how I get on!

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

Update.

Yesterday I took the harddrives out of the DNS-323 and put them in to my win-XP machine and deleted the partitions using fdisk. After that I added new partitions and formatted them with NTFS. After that I ran the winXP built in check application (Diskkontroll in Swedish – Scan Disc in English?) and the drives seem to be perfectly ok.

I downgraded the dns-323 to fw 1.02b114 and after that I installed them into the bays of the DNS-323 and chose to format them as RAID 1.

Guess what? – Same result! The damn thing freezes at 94 %.

My thought was that if I removed the traces of the ext2 partitions by overwriting them with NTFS partitions that it might help, but it was a no go. :-(

Anyone have more suggestions?

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

Sorry, this is a duplicate post from another thread... but it's the same problem as you guys are getting:

I just bought a pair of Seagate 750 GB drives (STS3750640AS). First was able to boot up and the formatting gets to 94% and then stops. (trying to format RAID 1)

Now the configurator tells me "No Hard drives were detected". I have firmware 1.01 out-of-the-box.
I've also tried plugging in one drive individually, no luck, still "No hard drives were detected".
NOTE: I was using Firefox for much of the setup, until the formating - I switched over to IE7

After power-cycling, I tried accessing the box.. and it comes up fine - but now I'll try upgrading to firmware 1.04 b21

UPDATE:
So far so good. I've copied some 17 GB of vids to the non-RAID partition. Tomorrow I'll try Fonz's fun_plug.

This is just a late update.

I t turned out that I had to RMA the unit. After I received the replacement I updated it to fw 1.03 and installed it. It worked right away.

at least you got a new one .. dlink support is not the best .. i take it you got it replaced from where you purchased it

No, actually I bought it on the webb fråm Pixmania and got the support straight from D-Link. They surprised me by sending a replacement straight away without demanding that I would first send in the original one (as Netgear does).

Maybe there are local variations to how they work (I live in Sweden).

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

I had the same issue, I found it to be one of the drives one not format, so I put it an external enclosure and tried formatting, but faield, tried again, it worked, did it a 3rd time to be sure, it worked. So I put it back in the NAS and it formatted just fine.

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

Just bought a DNS323-box. I put two WD 160Gig in, which previously had been formated FAT32.
First attempt to format ended at 94% and got stuck there.
Then I just switched the box off, then on and tried formatting again.
Then it worked wo problems.

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

I have had the very same problem and tried to format the machine in the GUI from multiple OS/browsers.

I appear to have resolved it tonight but cannot be sure 100% this is a solution (but it worked for me):

Start format and let it run
It gets stuck at 94%, leave it and let it run
Power down the DNS-323 and disconnect mains power; leave a couple of minutes
Reconnect power and boot up

I did this and the drive had been formatted OK and I'm copying data to it now

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

I'll try to be brief while stating the pertinent/interesting facts of my own experience (and solution)... For the record, I had this issue, and resoved it, without requiring any additional devices to format the disks (as I have no other SATA hardware).

1. I got the device specifically to do RAID 1 with it.  Installed two WD "green" 1Tb drives and formatted as such, and starting throwing data at it.
2. meanwhile, I learned about ffp and began playing with it, setting up ssh, etc...
3. then I started reading about corruption issues / failure to report or respond to drive failures properly when using RAID-1 on the DNS-323
4. So..... I decided I'd restart, rebuild, reinstall ffp and do "manual" mirroring between my two disks

This is when the 94% bug started to bite me

5. I used the web interface to instruct the DNS-323 to reformat as "individual disks".  An hour later it's at 94% and hasn't changed in 15+ minutes.  I wait a bit more, then try a power-cycle...
6. The web interface tells me I need to sync the drives sad
7. Following this I tried many things, including a hard-reset, a restore defaults, etc, etc, etc...

The Solution:

8. I pulled both drives from the enclosure, and placed the left drive in the right side, and left the other drive out...
9. powered-up, and did a simple format (I have no other SATA devices with-which I could zero the disks) and then I powered down when it managed to complete the task this time without hanging at 94%...
10. I left the used-to-be-left-drive in the right slot, and I placed the used-to-be-right-drive in the left slot, and powered-up...
11. web interface allowed me to format the "new" drive as an individual disk

The epilogue:

12. re-installed ffp, began backing up data, and have done a manual mirror from one disk to the other to confirm all is well.
13. will finish tidying everything up so my backups are all automatic via ssh and rsync and cron

Sort of a pain in the arse, but I was glad I finally got the DNS-323 to cooperate since I have no other means of configuring a SATA drive!

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

The serial numbers stored in flash are in sequential order.  Swapping disks in the bays will put them out of order and (most of the time) will allow the setup to work.

DNS-323     F/W: 1.04b84  H/W: A1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 400 GB Seagate SATA-300
DNS-323     F/W: 1.05b28  H/W: B1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 1 TB  WD SATA-300
DSM-G600   F/W: 1.02       H/W: B                Drive:  500 GB WD ATA

I just went through the same issue.... pulled the disks and deleted the partitions.  I put them back in the same order I removed them and they formatted OK.

Re: Can format individually to 100%, but JBOD and RAID stop at 94%

My attempts to format in a raid 1 config ended in the same result - progress bar frozen at 94%

I upgraded the FW to 1.05 and tried all of the suggestions from earlier posts with the same results.

A call to the ASUS Tech Support gave me the suggestion to erase my cookies and browsing history.  Other than the fact that connection to the drives is through a browser, I wasn't sure what effect this would have.  None.

An email to Tech Support and a reply gave the suggestion to format using a different computer.  Success.

DNS-323  HW ver: B1  FW ver: 1.05 raid 1
Seagate ST3500320A8 500GB drives
