US firmware on UK models, and Squeezebox?

I've just purchased a DNS-323, it's UK model. Is it safe to use the firmware on the US site? That has slightly newer firmware. 1.01 is installed on my unit.
Also is it possible for this to act as a server with a Squeezebox 3?

yes or you can use the one from the nordic ftp.
