FTP upload disconnects internet.

Im running the DNS-323 and 1.03 firmware.

Running the FTP server on port 21 runs ok when people browse my files, but shortly after the upload starts my PC loses its connection while the upload completes. As soon as the upload finishes I get my connection back.

I'm running Windows Vista and a Netgear DG834 V2 ADSL modem/router. Port 21 is forwarded in my router to the NAS box.

Also, if I try to use any other port, it just doesn't work. Only port 21 seems to work.

Any ideas?

Re: FTP upload disconnects internet.

Let's get some more information.

Your PC loses its connection while the upload completes - exactly what does that mean?

Your PC loses it's connection to what?  Your LAN?  The DNS-323?  The internet?
.... the upload completes ... what upload?  From where to where?

IF your PC loses it's connection to the internet when someone is uploading a file from the internet (outside of your LAN) to the DNS323 on your LAN, then the probability is that your internet connection is where the problem lies, it may just be too slow for what you are trying to do, and you might need to "throttle" the ftp transfer speed - see flow control on the ftp server web page.

Only port 21 seems to work - changing the port has to be a sort of synchronized deal - trouble is there are several different ways to achieve it, and several different problem areas - for example you can forward port 21 to port 21, in which case you need to change both ends when you make a change, or you can forward port nn to port 21, or you can forward port 21 to port nn and how your router works makes a big difference.

Tell us eaxatly what you're doing and we may be able to help.

sounds like severe congestion on a slow link. can be painful, and becomes worse the more connections are competing for the bandwidth.

My ADSL modem/Router doesn't lose it's internet connection. What i'm trying to say is that while someone is downloading from the FTP (from the internet) my pc which is connected to the same router can't access the internet at all. MSN logs out , can't browse etc. I've got a 8mbit/384k connection and it drops out even when it's just 1 person using the ftp and they have all the bandwidth to them selves.

As soon as the person finishes downloading from the DNS-323 (they still complete the file transfer) my MSN logs back in and I can browse again. It doesn't happen when they are just browsing my files on the DNS. It's something to do with the transfer.

Port 21 is working and forwarded properly, just that its giving me the problem above.

Re: FTP upload disconnects internet.

This is a common problem where one application saturates the upstream bandwidth. Does your router offer any type of QoS? For example, I'm using a WRT54GL router with the Tomato firmware, which allows me to prioritize upstream traffic based on port, IP, or MAC address. I currently have the following priorities:

IPTV, DNS: highest
http(s): high
p2p: lowest
everything else: low

Re: FTP upload disconnects internet.

Thanks guy's. Setting the flow control worked. I have it set at 35k/sec and now it works.

Only problem I Have now is that my left hand drive doesn't spin down ever. The right hand drive spins down and the light goes off, but the left hand drives stays spun up. I've never had this happen before.

If I set spin down to 5 mins . They both power off etc . But within 2 secs the left drive spins back up. If I set it to 10mins+ it never spins down. I'am not running a print server off the nas drive either.
