Hello there!
I've recently got a D-Link DIR-655 GigaLan router and have connected the DNS-323 to it.
Before I used to keep the DNS directly connected to the second ethernet port of the mobo with a crossed cable and all worked fine with two Samsung F1 750Gb inside the NAS (they are in the compatibility list of the DNS-323).
With the new router I'm experiencing the following problem: when Norton Ghost (v14 under Vista Home Premium 64 bit) is cloning my hd with the DNS-323 as destination, after a few minutes I get the amber led blinking in one hd and the configuration says array "degradated". I've experienced this both in raid 0, raid 1 or spare; I've tried to switch the position of the two hds but it' always the same hd that fails, but I've tested it with its own software several times and it resulted always 100% ok... furthermore, if I repete the Ghost cloning with only one hd inside the NAS (the one that fails or the other) everything goes fine, no amber light and the cloning is ok...
Any suggestion? Does anyone know if there is something specific to set in the router to work better with NAS?
Ciao!

I have that exact same router, default settings, with no issues. I use rsync and not Norton Ghost, so it seems like it's either that or the DNS.

BTW: My DIR-655 is hardware version A3, firmware version 1.11

Thanks for the feeds... my DIR-655 is the same... v1.11EU A3, firmware 1.05 for the DNS.
I'm starting to think that the problem might be Norton Ghost (it wouldn't be so surprising by the way...), but it's incredible that a software may cause (or seem to cause) hardware failures!!
I'll look for rsync and try if it's the same or not.

Non way... rsybc is ment to be used with command lines... too much complicated for me!!
I need something with a UI...

I have used ghost for almost 10 years now. It (the Norton version for home users) does not work correctly when trying to do it over a networked drive. Actually, if you have not tried to restore a backup, yet, good luck. I was never able to get one to come back correctly. The enterprise ghost version (which is based on the original ghost -- not Norton) works fine.
BTW, I also have a DIR-655 and 2 DNS-323's and no problems.

Thanks a lot for your feed... I've never tried to restore a backup from the network as far... simply because I could not finish ONE!
I bought Ghost (one the few original software I've got) just because it was the only backup software that recognizes my chipset (AMD790FX)... :-((
As far as you know, is there any patch that could be useful?
Which software are you using for you backups with the DNS at the moment?
Last question: when you had your troubles with Ghost, did you ever experience array corruption (the amber blinking light)?

An "amber blinking light" is an indication of a failed drive - it has nothing to do with 'array corruption'

In the configuration page of the NAS it says "Sync Time Remaining: Degraded". Obviously this depends on an hd failure, but in this case I've tested the hd (Samsung F1 750Gb) several times with ES Tool and it always resulted perfect... I've also low-level formatted it...

Baio,
I currently use Symantec Ghost (enterprise edition). This is the "true" ghost software. Norton is owned by symantec and once they realized all of us network and computer engineers were using the Ghost imaging software for backups (ghost was intended for making maching clones in a corporate environment), not just for cloning, they came out with a "home" version for backups. I have never gotten the home version to work, whether it was over a network, or directly to a local drive. This is when I decided to buy the enterprise version, but it requires a minimum of 5 licenses and is much more expensive. You can check it out under Symantec's website under small business; it is now called Ghost Solution Suite. ( http://www.symantec.com/business/produc … pvid=865_1 ) I only use the dos version of the software, becaust the interface is the same as it was 10 years ago. It comes with PC dos and is very easy to use. It also comes with Ghost Explorer which allows you to open the image files and loog through your backup just like windows explorer. You can then extract individual files from it. Very handy.
Anyway, no, I have never gotten an amber light on either of my DNS's except when I was intentionally doing testing.
As for the chipset, that should be irrelevant. A proper clone type backup system just makes a bit-for-bit copy of the hard drive either to another hard drive, or to a single file; it really could not care about the chipset, only the operating system.
Anyway, the ultimate conclusion that I had come to is that the Nortan version of Ghost for home backup is junk and you should just cut your losses. I found that even if it says you made a good backup, when it comes time to need said backup, is will be corrupt. For me it was 100% of the time. If you want a good product, get the enterprise version and learn how to use the dos interface (I still have trouble with the windows one which manages backups on multiple computers). It will cost, though.
If it is too much for you, any you only need data backup, not full cloning capability, consider Allway Sync ( http://allwaysync.com/ ). I use it for doing backup syncing. It works very well and it is free for home use. The international company I work for paid for it (business use) and uses it company wide with thousands of employees.

bq041,
thanks for your suggestions... I've realized the enterprise version of Norton Ghost is too much expensive for a home user...
I've chosen Norton because other software failed to recognize hd connected to the 790FX chipset in raid mode when I tried to restore images booting from cd.
I'll try Allway sync as soon as possible!
THe amber light was a broken hd... at last EsTool gave me the BAD SECTOR ECC ERROR code. I'm going to RMA it! It's a pity, but I prefer a broken hd instead of a broken NAS! ;-)
