I have successfully been using the SE16 line too, no problems there.

Fact is, I recently switched a  Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB (ST3320620AS) for a Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB (WD3200KS) after I got the impression that the SE16 perhaps was just a little more quiet.

Turned out there was not much difference; maybe the SE16 seems to vibrate slightly less...

Using 2x SAMSUNG 400GB SATA2 16MB HD401LJ. No problems here yet (>2 months). Well, no hardware problems... smile As for ext3 I originally used, well, now I know what 250GB of data lost means smile Drives themselves are OK, power management works fine, drives are very qiuet and they stay pretty cool.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I'm ready to buy the drives to put in a DNS 323. So I'm wondering if I should spend a few extra bucks on the RE2 drives - whether the TLER feature works with the DNS 323 or just buy regular SATA drives?

I saw a couple other mentions of this - but no outright answer.  Does anyone know for sure?

I don't have an answer either... but basically it's not as much a question if the DNS-323 supports TLER, the question is if Linux, specifically kernel 2.6.6 (as of now) supports it.  That may help you in your quest.

My 'guess' is it won't.

Surprised no one else is running the 500 GB Maxtor Maxline Pro (7H500F0) since Seagate's unloading for cheap (~140) them after buying out Maxtor.  Running 2 in a raid 1.  I'll post the proc entry later.

I recently purchased the unit.
I got two ST3400633AS - Seagate 400gb 7200.9 16mb ready to rock ..

only to get a 'no hard drives detected'

very disappointed. Will a firmware upgrade to the unit save my bacon, or am I off to the bank for more debt to buy disks?

By the way according to D-Link these drives have been tested and work

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I purchased the same Seagate ST3400633AS with no luck. The dns323 simply flashes the hard drive access light over and over again. Its laughing at me. Anyway changed over to a 300 gig Maxtor with zero problems.

Unfortently flashing the unit to the latest firmware doesn't help.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

interesting, I assume it's all about drive revisions. I have a brand new pair of ST3500641AS and the drive lights just flashe. Shame given how cheap they are for 500Gb drives ATM. drive firmware is 3.AAD if its any help. Any bad experiences with the HD501LJ before I empty my wallet some more?

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

As two people seem to have these working, I'm wondering whether I'm missing a trick here. I can stick other sata drives in the dns-323 and it recognises them fine, so I assume the box is fine. Did you do anything to the unit or the drives to get these drives working in the unit?

Thanks,

Pat.

No - I received the drives and NAS at the same time, and the first thing I did was plug in the drives. Everything just worked. The only thing that seems different is that you revision number is 3.AAD, where mine is 3.AA.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I'm the other guy with the pair of the Seagate ST3500641AS 500GB and it works without any problems and without having to do anything unusual.  All I did was install the 1.02b firmware (latest version at that time) before I started since I knew this 1.02b firmware was available for download.  Then upgraded with 1.03 when Aaron posted the new firmware availability a few weeks ago.  (Works fine with both 1.02b and 1.03 here.)

My first ST3500641AS drive is the retail type/kit.  It came from Fry's during the after-Thanksgiving sale last year.  It sat in that box for some time until I got the DNS-323.  I was actually going to put it in my PC and load Vista on it, but later bought a laptop and basically phased out that PC usage.  Looking at the label on this drive, it says Firmware 3.AAJ and the date code is 07017.  This one went into the left-side slot which is slot 1.

My second drive is an OEM type (without the big retail box/kit).  This drive came from Newegg in early/mid February this year.  On the drive/label/sticker itself, it says Firmware 3.AAK and the Date Code is 07237.  This one is in the right-side slot (slot 0, I guess... and didn't know which is slot 0 at that time or they both would have been swapped during the initial setup).

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

A pair of the following work just fine on FW: 1.03 in RAID1.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB SATA (HDS721010KLA330)

Reported as 982880MB. (~960GB)

However! FW: 1.01 reported 960GB when setting up the RAID. (I actually stopped the format whilst it was in process because I noticed 1.03 was available! oops! this caused one of the drives LED's to go amber! uh-oh.)
After upgrading from 1.01 to 1.03, and re-setting to RAID1, all was well, but during the setup, it reported the drive to be 998GB... still working fine as i continue to offload all my media onto the 323 from 2 machines.

Runs warm at ~47C during heavy usage. Ambient room temp is ~24C

Did consider setting up as RAID 0.... NOT! tongue

Same here.

I am planning to add 1TB disk as soon as they drop the price.

Now it is time to buy a 500. I assume that after Christmas 1TB disks will be cheaper.

Running 4 DNS boxes FW 1.03 (1 at home, 3 at work) each with these two disks:

Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJS 500 GB - 7200 tpm - Serial ATA-II

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: WDC      Model: WD5000AAJS-00TKA Rev: 12.0
Type:   Direct-Access                    ANSI SCSI revision: 03
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: WDC      Model: WD5000AAJS-00TKA Rev: 12.0
Type:   Direct-Access                    ANSI SCSI revision: 03

I find them very quiet, and I got them cheap too, they were 95€ excl. in some kind of promo.
