Sharing a NAS volume via Hamamchi or a VPN, possible ?

Hi every1 smile

My DNS-323 drives are connected in "My Computer" as network drives.  I tried to build a shorcut for them, in the computer connected on Hamachi. In it's shared folder.  Unfortunately, it gives me an error message each time I tried to open the shortcuts from a distant computer (trought Hamachi).

What's the proper way to share a NAS folder over internet ?

There is many ways you could do it in Linux.... ie: Setup NFS and Have an auto mounter in the host computer and ssh in get to it from there... You could also use fuse...
I been trying to get hamachi ported to the DNS but is impossible since is close source.

Good Luck

hell0: There is no such option to share the mapped drive.  That's why I tried to bring it in shared folders as a shortcut..

Oops, sorry wink
I don't know why windows refuses to share a mapped drive, i understand why it won't work with a shortcut...
Try http://www.blisstonia.com/eolson/notes/smboverssh.php which works for me and is not that bad i think.

You can use a VPN to connect to your network and then access the DNS-323 drives over the VPN.

Hamachi IS a VPN of sorts, it's an encrypted tunneled network link wrapped up in an easy-to-use package.  I got SMB shares to work over the link for a client about a year and a half ago, and while I forget the details, it involved doing port forwarding on the Hamachi-connected computer to bridge the networks.  Nothing to do with the DNS-323 itself (the client used a ReadyNAS, but it's the same principle for any NAS) and it was still easier than setting up a real SSH tunnel or etc - for an all-Windows shop anyway.  Just two or three steps to make a persistent connection.

The Hamachi support forums should have what you need - search on ReadyNAS (or just "NAS sharing") if you can't find anything specific for the -323.  In fact, I found a HowTo here.  And when I get home I'll have a look in my documentation files to see if I saved what I wrote down.

I currently use a hardware VPN to connect to my network with no problems.

DNS-323     F/W: 1.05b28  H/W: B1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 1 TB  WD SATA-300
DSM-G600   F/W: 1.02       H/W: B                Drive:  500 GB WD ATA

Thanks guys.. Still a little bit complicated for my purposes tough. wink

Is there a P2P software that could let me see the network drive remotely ?

Well, getting file sharing over the Internet without letting the whole world into your stuff is not a pushbuttion operation.  Hamachi takes care of a lot of the complexity right off, and a few tweaks to your local network (depending on your brand of router - needs to support port forwarding) will extend its reach to your DNS-323.  The HowTo I posted a link to above got me going, after a bit of reading and some trial and error.  Windows needed a registry tweak and a few simple commands in the DOS box and we were off and running - that is a lot simpler than any alternative I can think of.

The DNS-323 does come with an FTP server, which is a very simple and alarmingly insecure way to access files remotely, but if you have nothing of personal importance on your drives and you unplug everything else on your network whenever you open up your firewall to the outside world, you might get away with it for awhile?  I think DLink even offers a reverse DNS service for added convenience.  But I'd advise against even peeking out from behind your NAT without knowing what you're doing, and why.
