Righ Sequence for Upgrading HDD

The current setup is 2x500 Gigs in the 323 (standard with FW 1.04.). Normally, data is backed up to Drive 1 and then copied from Drive 1 to Drive 2 using software. We want to begin the migration to 1 TB drives and use one of the 500 Gigs in a computer. Would this be the correct sequence to upgrade one of the harddrives?

1. Remove Drive 1 (500 Gig) AND Drive 2 (500 Gig).
2. Flash with FW 1.05.
3. Insert Drive 1 back in.
4. Insert a New 1 TB drive to slot 2.
5. Run backup sequence to sync up Drive 1 (500 Gig) & Drive 2 (1,000 Gig).
6. Continue to use NAS as before.

Does that sound about right?

Re: Righ Sequence for Upgrading HDD

Just pulled the HDD's, performed the FW upgrade from 1.04 to 1.05. Rebooted, plugged the drives back in and logged in to the admin area. Now, the system is asking me to choose a setup:

Select a RAID type:
- Standard (Individual Disks)
- JBOD (Linear - Combines Both Disks)
- RAID 0 (Striping - Best Performance)
- RAID 1 (Mirroring - Keeps Data Safe)

The original drives were in standard and NOT raid. Choosing standard brought up another popup telling me that this will reformat the harddrives? There is a skip button but doing results in:

Volume Name:  Volume_1
Volume Type:  RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining:  Degraded

If there a way to get the unit going without a reformat and keep our existing data?

Re: Righ Sequence for Upgrading HDD

ok, not sure why but plugging in the drives either together or in the "incorrect sequence" resulted in the degraded raid array notice. Took out the drives and plugged in the right drive first, same thing. Then tried it with just the left one first, shut down, then the other one, then everything works again. Man, not too user friendly if you ask me. Hope this can help others.
