Reliability: disks or unit?...

Hello,

I am a new DNS323 owner.
Over a few hours I activated fonz fun_plug, optware, unfs, bittorrent client, usb storage,...: way much more than what I expected from the device, and first of all I wanted to thank everybody here for the great work to make all this available.

My first question is about the DNS323 reliability.
Sometimes here people post about their DNS323 having failed.
Do we have an idea:
- of the percentage of units having failed, over the others quietly running for monthes/years?
- of the percentage of cases in which this is a disk which failed, versus in which the unit itself (motherboard,...) which failed?

Thanks...

Re: Reliability: disks or unit?...

I don't know that anyone has been keeping track of the failures, and I will point out that the folks with failed units are a lot more likely to be vocal about it (some are quite vociferous), and also that what you'll see here is probably a tiny fraction of the installed base, those of us who like to fiddle.

Incase you'd like to start tracking it - I've had my DNS-323 (HW Rev A)a little over 18 months, the disks inside (2x80GB Maxtors) are older than the unit, I have had no failures of disks or device, and any lost data has been due to my own fiddling.

Why not?... Some forums have a survey functionality, that would make it simpler. Is this possible here?

Probably possible but pointless - as Fordem pointed out, you won't get a fair sampling.  Only a tiny minority (of mostly tinkerers) would ever sign on or interact here, and even amongst us, those who've had no failures won't bother to respond.

The DNS-323 is among the least expensive and most proven products in its category, and the manufacturer implicitly tolerates hacking to release far more capability than advertised.  To my mind, with that kind of deal, reliability (beyond surviving the basic warranty without 'sploding) is almost a bonus... if you're really concerned, pony up a few hundred extra bucks and go with something in the pro-sumer range like an Infrant (now Netgear but don't let that dissuade you...)

Ok, I admit that you are both right.
If something happens to my box, I will join the vociferous ones here cool

Re: Reliability: disks or unit?...

I there, just to add my own experience here:

I've been running my NAS-323 without anything bad happening for the last 90 days or so.
My unit is basically up and running 24H/day.
The fan is still quiet.
The cooling seems decent enough as drive temperature does not even get close to maximum operating temperature specification.
