Problems with SMTP email service

I cant seem to get the smtp working.  I've tried 2 smtp services, one public and the other is using gmails with a login.  I've tried to use just the ip address and it doesnt work either.  In both cases it says SMTP failed when I hit the test button.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I did not have any problems but I am sending to my own mail server.

If you are going to a public server make sure that the authentication info is correct and the sender e-mail is legitimate user account and domain. Is your ISP blocking port 25 to servers that are not theirs?

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

The weird thing is that I use outlook with the same smtp server and it works just fine.  That's why I don't think it is blocking anything.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

Mail sending using DNS-323 is just pickier than using Outlook, just file a support request to D-Link! DSM-G600 did have same problem but they did fix it in the latest firmware.

Hello Yerbie:
What firmware are you using now??? Did you try the 1.02 ??? I have no problem with the smtp issue by using the 1.02 firmware.

I am using 1.02 and just tried it again and now it seems to work again.  The odd thing is that I didn't change anything on the settings, but just hit test again and it worked.  Thanks for everyone's help!

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

yerbie, you mentioned you couldn't get gmail's SMTP server working with 1.02, is this still the case? anyone else?

(I know this would be a problem report for dlink, I'd just like to hear what others are experiencing)

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

Well, since Gmail doesn't use SMTP on port 25, but rather SMTP-with-TLS on port 587, it's not that strange that the DNS-323 doesn't work with Gmail wink

No, it's working now.  The funny thing is that I didn't modify anything, but just tried it again and it worked hmm

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I can΄t get mailing via  my ISP΄s smtp-server to work. The smtp server works fine for my mailprogram ( thunderbird 1.5.0.9 ). The configuration is done the same for both username/password. I haven΄t got a clue to what is wrong. Any suggestions?

firmware 1.02

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I have the issue also with the emails not working. I have been back and forth with D-Link about that and the Anonymous FTP read access (corrected in 1.02b) problem... This is the lateset that I got from D-Link by email only minutes ago.....

Yes we have has some issues with the email being able to work in Raid 1 What hard drive models are you using? We have release FW 1.02b that has fixed some of this we are also releasing 1.3 very soon which I was told has fixed these issues.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I have my email alerts on the DNS-323/1.02b working somewhat fine - I can receive the emails/alerts via my ISP's email server and also via my website's email server.

The problem I have is the frequency of the emails.  When I set it to send me an email/status every 1 hour, it does it every 61 minutes instead of every 60 minutes.   For example, the emails arrive at 12:15, 1:16, 2:17, 3:18, 4:19, 5:20, 6:21, etc.  For fun... I set it to 0 hr 59 minutes - I thought maybe it will then turn out to be 60 minutes each time wink  But noooo... it does it exactly 59 minutes each time (ie. this 59 minutes counter/timer is working perfectly!).  So... am I the only one with this 61 minutes email problem?  What I want is every 60 minutes, or is this 61 minutes interval normal?  Thanks.

(ps. my router/firewall (different brand) sends me emails every hour too - this is exactly every hour; not every 61 minutes smile)

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

Perhaps your system clock is drifting? see http://dns323.kood.org/howto:reduce_clock_drift

This wouldn't account for the 59 min emails working, but it would let you know if your system clock keeps accurate time.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

Mig, thank you for the link to reduce the clock drift.  I looked at it and went "uh-oh"... I don't have any experience doing this type of mod neutral  Hopefully soon I'll find enough courage to do this.  Thanks again for the pointer.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

Well, I have 1.03, running RAID1 still, and STILL my email notifications are failing... I have it setup 100% the same way as my WBR-2310 router, and the router emails work flawlessly, and the proper ports are open in the router.... can't say I am surprised....

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I didn't have to do anything too unusual or open more ports to get the email notifications to work.  I'm using a POP3 mail method currently and the only special setup is by authentication (Account log-in with password, etc in the Tools -> Email Alerts page).  As for the Anonymous setting there, it also works fine via my ISP's mail sender since I'm already on the same "local" network.  However, the Anonymous method does not work with my two other outside POP3 mail senders - these are account based, require a password (authentication),... and then both will happily work.  Also I think the Setup -> LAN page in the DNS-323 must have the correct/valid Gateway, DNS1 and DNS2 numbers for this send mail to function.  If I remember correctly, it says Fail when I hit the Test button, but this DNS-323 box actually sends the emails out just fine for the various events/interval.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

I have a slightly different problem with the email functionaliity. The "Test Email" button works, I receive the test email at my email account. I also receive an email when I change the admin password. However, I never receve a daily sace report, even though I have selected "Space Status" with an interval of 24hrs.

I must be missing some kind of scheduled job?

P.S. I'm running Etch.

Re: Problems with SMTP email service

OK, so get THIS... I tried fooling around with the mail settings again, and after re-entering ALL of the info on the page 3 times, it FINALLY works the third time... before I manually typed it all with ONE FINGER, I put all the stuff into notepad, and copy & pasted it into BOTH my router & NAS, and the router was fine, NAS wasn't.... NOW all of a sudden it works, WHAT GIVES?!? lol.
