I'm looking into getting the 323 but I have some questions.
Is anyone running a website from their 323? Could you post a link? If so what kind of performance can I expect? I know that faster CPU and more RAM = better performance but could I host a site like this http://www.tanktheory.com/ or like this http://beerme.com/index.php? Something meant for relatively low traffic but perhaps with lots of photos or a blog?
I have an old 1.7 Ghz Athlon computer that I could turn in to a fully fucntional NAS like the 323 or the Synology 207 series (it's already just networked storage running PCLinux) but it's huge and noisy and probably consumes more power than necessary.
I'd like small and simple but at what point, hardware wise, am I in fantasy land?
Also, the Synology has a nice feature of IP camera support (may not use it but I do have an IP camera I could install someday) http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS207+/index.php
The DS207+ also has a 500Mhz processor (not sure which brand) but twice the RAM and is only $100 more. Any reason one would should consider the 323 over the DS207+?

It can be done. See http://dns323.kood.org/howto:lighttpd_php for info on setting it up. I don't know about performance, since I do not host a web site from either of min. As far as advantages, I bought my most recent DNS323 for $119, and that beat the heck out od the Synology DS207+.
The big advantages of the DS207+ are memory and that is setup and configured to run a web site, where you would have to set-up the DNS323. On the down side, the DS207+ uses more electricity, if that is a concern. If it were me, I would go with the DNS323, but for me it's about the money. I got a 1TB WD Hard drive and the DNS323 for the price of just the DS207+.

yeah $119 is a strong argument. There's a Microcenter near me, I'll pick one up this week and give it a shot. Thanks!!

Still, it might suit me until I can afford a more robust solution. Webserver function or no, I need a good NAS.

I recommend you have a look at http://www.simplephpblog.com/ I am hosting my homepage on my DNS-323 and have just started a simplephpblog there. It's not a heavy website but I think performance is fair. If you have low traffic and want to avoid long response times on first entry you may want to consider not spinning down the disks and going into power save mode. Alternatively, you could place your stuff outside the HDD on a USB stick. I haven't tried this since my 323 is always up and running transmission anyway.

It looks like I am joining this conversations a little late, but just saw the link in the server logs.
I really didn't need anything complex, just dynamicly generated PHP with SSI. I use the FTP function to listen to my MP3 collection, and thats pretty much it.
I especially like the DNS-323 since it is running Lighttpd, and all the servers I run elsewhere run Lighttpd. I have been running this DND-323 for 2.5 years now, as I recieved it as an evaluation product from D-Link.

I believe I have successfully installed lighttpd, along with ffp .05 onto my DNS323. I am having trouble as a noob with the available php package. should it be downloaded and unpacked to the root of
drive? it seems like there are duplicate folders in the package as the same as the ffp folder/directory.
please clarify as I am a noob. maybe it should go into separate a php directory within the ffp
directory? any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks. I use izar, but is there
something else to use instead? not winzip, correct? Otherwise, this seems like a great machine!

First I suggest you read up on how funplug 0.5 works at http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.5/
Assuming you got the PHP package from there (in the "packages" directory), you can simply install it by typing:
funpkg -i php-5.2.6-2.tgz
This will copy all files in the appropriate places. You also need to enable PHP functionality in lighttpd.conf (/ffp/etc/lighttpd.conf).

Thanks, I seem to have been able to get it done. Now, I just need to figure out how to overcome the problem with permissions within the FFP directory for moving/copying files to the directory. Thanks again!
