DNS 323 Mediaserver

I'm thinking of buying a NAS and a Pinnacle Soundbridge to play my music in my livingroom without having my PC on. What is your experience with the UPNP mediaserver? I read a post about problems with playlists.
Is there anyone with a setup like this?

Re: DNS 323 Mediaserver

My 360 uses UPNP and does not see anything on the DNS :-(

Re: DNS 323 Mediaserver

Crow,

Hopefully you are still watching this thread...

I have installed Firefly on my DNS-323 and it is quite smoothly serving mp3 files to my Soundbridge.  I have a US model SB, but if you search the Roku Forums (http://forums.rokulabs.com/) for "DNS-323" you should also find evidence that the Pinnacle version also works with Firefly.

Playlists are another matter.  If you want a solution that will support playlists out-of-box you should probably look at a NAS that comes with Twonkyvision installed.  I think LaCie has one and there may be a couple of others.  You should also find more info on this on the Roku Forums.

I have playlists working fine on Firefly, but I had to write some code to build the playlists.  The issue is that the DNS-323, like virtually all low-end NAS boxes, runs a version of Linux while I assume your PC that you will use to create the playlists runs Windows.  A playlist is basically nothing more than a file containing a list of the file system path locations of the mp3 or other music files.  Since Firefly runs on the DNS not the PC it inherently recognizes UNIX path strings rather than the Windows path strings your PC would produce.  If you are interested in further details I have posted more information on this in the Roku Forums.
