Loud buzzing sound when downloading a lot of torrents...

I love this thing.  It is amazing.  Just wanted to get that out of the way first.

I've installed two Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA hard drives in this thing and I'm extremely happy.  My biggest selling points have been that I can watch all my movies on my PS3 now without my computer having to be on, and that my family can log in and grab any TV shows and movies at any time of the day or night.

I also like that I can use to perform my regular bittorrent activities without leaving my computer on.  I figure this saves energy, reduces the amount of noise in my apartment, and is just neat overall.

The problem is, when I download a lot of torrents (I'm going to ballpark it at more than 6 at a time) the unit starts making this buzzing sound - as if something is wrong.  The more torrents I pile in there, the louder the buzzing gets.  I noticed after leaving it on all night downloading about 8 torrents the unit was extremely hot.  So I've rigged up a small, quiet fan to blow air into the front of the unit whenever I want to get some heavy usage out of it.  But it still makes the buzzing sound (though the volume has come down a bit).  The unit isn't hot at all anymore after I added the fan - in fact the casing is cool to the touch.

What could possibly be making this sound?  I've never heard hard-drives make this kind of noise before, and the disks are reading just fine with no problems.  I thought that maybe the heat was causing some poorly-made metal parts to expand and amplify the vibrations from the drives - but this didn't happen when I copied 800 GB of data to the unit (which took a few hours) - only when I use the BitTorrent function.

Any ideas or suggestions?  If I have to use the BitTorrent feature less heavily - then that's what I'll do.  But I figure it wouldn't hurt to have an idea of what is going on anyway.

Thanks.

Re: Loud buzzing sound when downloading a lot of torrents...

I am sort of experiencing the same as you. Just some speculations from my side:

Simply, the torrent client is causing a lot of disk reads and that is the reason for all the noise and heat. Because of the lack of huge RAM the client cannot cache some of the data that is frequently requested from your peers so every package needs be re-read from disk at all times - unlike desktop clients where you usually have lots of RAM to store the "popular" pieces of your torrents during upload. In the same manner, disk writes must be done more often because it cannot be paged in RAM for any longer time. Anyone agree?

What torrent client are you using?

I have also noticed that the front cover is somewhat likely to vibrate and I had to experiment with the positions of the metal tongues on the inside to prevent noise.

I am just using the BitTorrent client that came built in with the newest firmware for the device.

Well, I haven't tried it but I can for sure recommend you to try Transmission + Clutch

Re: Loud buzzing sound when downloading a lot of torrents...

Thanks for the suggestion.  I looked at it - but I'm not entirely comfortable with the more in-depth programming side of this device.  I just don't know enough about Unix to be comfortable tooling around in there, so I'm just gonna stick with what comes with the thing.

All that said - the loud buzzing sound seemed to magically go away after I made this post.  I'm going to test it out and see if I can re-create it - but if I can't, well, sweet!  Guess it either means whatever part was experiencing problems either fell off or fixed itself  ;-)

I didn't know FW 1.05 comes with a BT client. Where do you find it?

Speaking of, what do us non-Windows people do to get this going, mmm?  (I ask you as if it's your fault...)

Search the forum for it, I and a few others have posted the BT program files in a tarball which you just need to extract on the DNS.  Myself, I do not like the built in client, you could consider transmission.
