hi guys,
I have just bought the DNS-323. I have two hard disk SAMSUNG SATA 500GB. They are exactly the same type, I bought them at the same place. When I first inserted them, only one of them was recognized perfectly, the other one is ignored. I tried switching them, it is always the same HD which is not recognized. Well, the blue light is flashing permanently. According to the guide, it should be redish in case of disk failure. All lights except the one from the HD are blue and not flashing.
I updated the firmware with the 1.05 with telnet access. The dmesg command returns "No HD found".
I first thought it might come from the HD. So, I went to the reseller for a return. He tested the disk and said it was working perfectly.
So I don't know what to do next ? Any idea?
THanks in advance.

No one can help me?
I tried to contact the D-Link support team but the support was really helpless.
I double check my HD and it is working fine. Any idea ?

Let's look at your symptoms.
One drive works and one drive doesn't - it doesn't matter which bay you put them in - the same one drive works in both bays, and the same one drive doesn't in both bays.
Doesn't that suggest that this is caused by the drive itself?
Have you tried one drive at a time?
I can conceive of a situation where the unit may lack the power capacity to start both drives so that one will spin and the other will not, and since today's disk drives contain logic to delay the spin up (to prevent power supply overload), then a situation such as you describe might occur - however - the unit should be able to spin either drive as a single drive.
If it doesn't I would suspect the non functional drive to have a fault of some sort - and yes - I did notice that you said the reseller tested the desk and it was working perfectly.
The bottom line is - you have ....
A possible defective drive
Possible incompatible drives
A possible defective DNS-323
You need to determine which of the three it is - if the drive does not spin up as a single drive, consider the drive defective, if it does, try a pair of different drives - if you still have the problem, consider the unit defective.

How did the reseller test the drive?
The reason I ask is I recently had a problem getting a Seagate 1TB drive to be recognized on a Linux system
at my place of employment. I took the drive to our IT department, they attached it to a XP system and performed
successful "quick format" wrote some data to the drive and declared the drive good.
I messed around with the drive for a few more hours, google searches, examining firmware difference with this
Seagate 1TB and another that was working on the Linux system. After taking a break from my frustrating efforts,
I decided to connect the drive to a XP system and perform a "full format" which FAILED!!! Thus confirming the drive
was defective. I asked the IT department to repeat the "full format" on the suspect disk, and then they declared the
drive defective and gave me a replacement drive which I quickly integrated into the Linux system.
So, possible the reseller's test could be giving a false positive?

Not arguing but - I believe an unformatted drive shows up with a solid blue LED prior to format (or format failure) - at least that's been my experience.
Fooling around with defective drives in this unit I have noted that if it cannot detect the drive at all, the drive LED will not turn on, and if can detect the drive, but not identify it or the drive does not come ready, that is when the LED flashes.
Now I'm not certain if I'm reading this correctly - was it just the two drives that were bought at the the same place, or were the two drives and the DNS-323 bought at the same place? If it's the latter, I would be taking them all back and telling the reseller - it doesn't work.

Thanks for your reply.
I wil try to answer all your question.
First, I bought the two disks and the DNS at two different places. But the two disks are coming from the same place. It is true that he tested from XP. And I asked a friend to test it again and I think he did it from XP too. I will try to ask him to format it from Linux.
Because I think it should come from the hard disk. I did the following test:
- Inserting both disk, it is always the same which is flashing blue
- Inserting only the good disk, everything is fine, LED is blue and not flashing.
- Inserting the so-called defective disk, the LED is flashing blue. In the web console, it is saying that the HD is synchronizing and then it says that it found nothing.
It is for me clear that it comes from the HD. But for the reseller, the hard disk is working fine. So, I don't know how to get my money back.
At the time, I would like to test with another disk but I dont want to spend all my money on defective hard disk....

Ok I tried my defective HD with another NAS a friend have, He has a Synology DS 207 and my HD is perfectecly recognized and I was able to put files on it.
I think I am going to send my DNS-323 back and buy a Synology. Really disappointed by this stuff, And D.Link support team was really helpless.
[EDIT]
For some reason, it recognized my second drive but just for a moment. The reboot later, it was gone... Definitely a piece of shit this DNS

I sent my DNS back and I received back a new one. Still the same problem. I tried to reformat completely both HD with my computer (I managed to find a way to acces them through my computer). Still the same problem. I am arguing with DLink. They are saying that my HD are not compatibles with DLink. I am sorry but you can't sell products incompatible with a standard eSata HD. Why not selling USB key working only with HP computers and not with IBM computers ? Or Wifi router working only with Linksys DSL modem ? THat is insane !!
Well I am going to throw away this piece of shit and buy a good NAS: Synology DS207.
