FTP HELP PLEASE

I have a DNS-323 NAS unit, I am trying to set up FTP access for myself and family.  What I want the web interface is not allowing me.  I gave my login root access to the drive, but I wanted each of my family user to have full access to their folder, and read access to a public folder i have created in there. My structure looks something like this
\-Root of Drive\
  + Family
         |-DaD
  +Public
Well when i put my dad in the FTP and added his dir with R/RW permissions, it only allows me to choose that one folder, if i try to add him in again with read access only to the public folder then the 1st ftp i created goes away.  I even tried to add him into a group and this will not work either.  I also tried adding a shortcut of the Public folder in his folder but the unit does not treat it as a virtual drive please help...

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

Hi

Did you try to create a group and add all the users to that one? The you will add access to each folder to the users with RW and then the group access to the public folder with R access.

The other thing I am thinking might require telnet access.

Edit: Sorry, read it quickly and did not see you already try that. But  did you did it the way I said?

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

In the Users / Groups I created the group but that only allows you to put users in there and no function to add directorys, and if you are talking about the Network access adding the group in there to have R access to just the Public folder I did that but that is just for LAN access only and it didnt work for the ftp he didnt see the public directorys.  Thanks for your response too I appreciate the help, it just seems this D Link web interface is really really basic

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

Well, it's basic indeed.

Try this:

Advanced - User & Groups - Create Group
Advanced - FTP Server - Check Category Group - Click Browse - Select the Public Folder - Set Read permissions.

See if that works. Although I don't know if I will overwrite the settings for the users. I believe it shouldn't

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

It takes the USER out of the FTP Access List and replaces it with the Group account and only gives access to the dir I selected so then the USER looses his access to their Home Dir

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

The DNS-323 does not support assigning users to multiple folders. It will overwrite each time you change it. What you are looking for is a type of "alias" linking to folders outside of your own primary folder which is unsupported.

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

Have you tried putting all the folder inside the same one, give access to that folder to a group and then changing the owner of each personal folder to the correct one?

That will require telnet access though.

PS. Dlink, just from curiosity, are you really from Dlink? xD

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

There is always a way around it, it is just a matter of how much work and time you want to invest.

Why are you trying to do so much with ftp?  FTP is actually not a very good thing to use and it is very insecure.  It is relatively easy for passwords to be captured and the system compremised.

Re: FTP HELP PLEASE

bq041, he might need it for back up purposes. It's much faster than copying files trough windows, in my opinion.

LogicBox, fun_plug will give you telnet access, which you might need to accomplished what I told you. Anyway, fun_plug will not have a negative impact unless you have telnet access to your DNS323 in the open because it will login without prompting for password.

Then you might need to install denyhosts but I only read that this week. I didn't know about that before.
