Slower Write Performance Using WinXP

I just purchased a DNS-323 and for the most part I love this unit. I have 2 750GB drives in the unit configured in JBOD mode (I tried RAID 0 and the performance was negligible). I'm running a Gigabit Network and surprisingly, under Vista, the performance is excellent. When transferring large files I was getting ~28% Network Utilization and according to Vista 16.8 MB/s write speeds (more than double my old Lacie NAS). Under WinXP however it is a different story. I can only get ~13% Network Utilization and much slower write speeds. I double checked the driver and it is the latest. Just to confirm, I copied the same file to my Vista PC and I was getting ~44% Network Utilization so the network card or cable aren't the issue. Can anyone give me any ideas why my Vista to DNS-323 transfer are so much faster than when using XP? Both my PC's are comparable.

WinXP Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
Asus P5B Deluxe
2GB DDR2

Vista Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz
Asus P5K-VM
2GB DDR2

Re: Slower Write Performance Using WinXP

How are your two PCs connected to the DNS-323? Are there any 100M (fast Ethernet) components between their paths? Make sure you have the latest driver for the gigabit NIC on your XP machine (I believe you've already done so).

This copy is from XP to Vista, right? Again, can you give a complete network diagram?

Re: Slower Write Performance Using WinXP

Thanks for the reply. I currently have all my devices connected to my router. My router is a WRT350N. It is flashed with DD-WRT 2.4 SP1. The router is in my basement along with my DNS-323. The HTPC (Vista PC) is on the main floor. My PC is on the second floor. I have 2 CAT6 drops running into my office. To be safe I tested both drops and even tried alternate patch cables with the same result. XP->Vista (or vice versa), is fast. XP->DNS-323, not so fast. I haven't tested read speeds yet to see if the same issue occurs. I may give that a try tonight.

To be honest compared to the pathetic speeds I was getting with my Lacie Ethernet Big Disk, this device is a HUGE improvement. That device was Gigabit but it barely reached 100Mbps speeds. I also love the power management and anonymous read/write permissions.

P.S. I just remembered that my P5B Deluxe has two NIC's on the mainboard. I may disable the current one and enable the second one (typically I only enable the needed one in the BIOS).
