network issue.

Hi All,
I am trying to setup a home network with a router ( not all machines on my network have wifi ) :

   dsm-g600 <--wired--> router <--wired/wif--> computer ( XP )

I have a buffalo router to which I have the dsm-g600 connected using lan cable.

If i connect my laptop using wired connection to the router, I can access files/songs off the dsm-g600 without any interruptions.
But if I switch to wifi, browse the nas & try to play the song, it  breaks/pauses. ( I am however able to browse internet etc using wifi to connect to router ).

I am assuming it is a network issue. How do i debug this.

any helpful tools/advice/tips is greatly appreciated.
regards,

Re: network issue.

You are using windows or Linux?
Have you mapped your dsmg600 as network drive?

Free is BETTER!!
Use GNU/Linux!!

Re: network issue.

It looks like low throughput issue.
What level of wifi signal is displayed on the notebook?

Re: network issue.

The laptop runs Windows XP - SP2. I dont think i mapped it as a drive ( It appears in the "Local Network" in XP )

Also, the signal strength is pretty good ( the router is only a a couple of meters away ).  Also i can access internet ( youtube/streaming sites ) fine. with wifi.

Re: network issue.

I am also face the same issue! And also using XP - SP2. I have mapped the drive. The intermitent connection is very frustating especially when streaming video from the g600.

Solutions?

Re: network issue.

I also have the same problem. Using a wired connection to my router everything is fine. When switching to wireless streaming MP3 becomes impossible. This is pretty low-bandwith, so this problem is pretty weird.

I use a MacBook with Ubuntu 8.04, I mount the network shares via fstab.

Any suggestions?

Re: network issue.

I tried running wire shark on the xp box, and found at the time the playback stops, there is an entry for "previous segment missing".

I was not sure how to debug this, and thought perhaps the router was getting overwhelmed trying to convert Ethernet packets to wifi and reverse.

So I connected the dsm to the router in wireless mode, and  removed the ethernet cable just to be sure it connects over wireless. And now it works fine. It is able to stream music/videos over wifi.

So it may be a similar issue you both are facing.
