I am considering purchasing a DNS-323.

Here is how I am thinking of using it.

I am going to use the first drive to store data, music and video files for home entertainment and other computers to access data.

I will use the second drive to backup the first drive on a systematic basis.

I will purchase another SATA hard disk and rotate in with the second drive to have an offsite copy of the data.

I am currently using Retrospect backup software and plan on using with DNS-323.

Will this system work?

The DNS does not like drive swapping. It records the serial number of the disk in Flash. If you are not Linux savy would recommend backing up your offsite copy using USB.

If you do know Linux fairly well, then you can use ffp to get terminal access to the DNS in which case, you can unmount and swap the second drives with the power on. This allows you to swap the drives without upsetting the DNS, at least until it is rebooted. You can also write a script to update the flash when you swap the drives. Lastly, the SATA connectors in the unit are not destigned for repeated swapping and may wear out.

Based on your input I understand why the DNS is not the correct solution for what I am looking for.

So it sounds like I just need a NAS with one bay/drive and a backup drive. For the backup drive use a USB external hard drive (like a Maxtor One Touch).

How does that sound?

I use an Icy Dock (USB/E-SATA) screw-less enclosure MB664US-1S for my backup drive. http://www.icydock.com/product/mb664us-1s.html
It works very well, and allows the flexibility to increase backup drive size, when hard drive prices decrease.

I am using the USB port on the back of my DNS for doing my backups to a USB drive. I thing the guts of the USB-SATA are from acom, or something like that. I don't ever put the cover back on, because I am swapping drives around a ton.

edit: nevermind, I see it just takes some Linux familiarity. Is it just a matter of unmounting, replacing the drive, and mounting it again or is there more to it?

You see now - that's the difficulty with wiki and forums - any one can post their opinion, and you, the reader are left to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Personally, I'd agree with bq041, and suggest that you not go swapping drives in and out of the DNS-323 (and I've done a lot of swapping)

So, any further details about how to backup the DNS to an external USB HDD? I'm considering something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6812264002 to make it easy to rotate.

For using the USB port on the DNS, it is pretty staight forward. You can use fun_plug to install the kernel module and to mount the drive fro you. from there, you can use whatever you like to make your backups. to swap that drive out, just unmount it and kill the power to the usb drive. You can then swap it out. You can even make a script for mounting and unmounting it for you, it is pretty simple.
