ftp modification time wrong & is ftp safe?

I turned on the DNS-323 ftp server so I can keep my files synced between work and home. I can ftp to the nas just fine from work and I thought I was good to go. I wanted to use syncbackSE to sync files, but the modification time changes by +7 hours when a file is copied to the nas (to GMT time?). I checked last night and the nas knows I'm in MDT and has the same time as my work computer.

When I try syncing a file, it is copied from my work computer to the nas. The time gets changed by +7 hours, and when I sync again, it copies the file from the nas to my work computer b/c it has a later time. Is this a known problem or am I doing something wrong? I'm very new to ftp and don't really know what I'm doing.

Also, searching this forum for answers, I saw a lot of people saying ftp is not safe and you shouldn't run an ftp server on the nas.  Is there a way to make it safer without hacking the nas?

Re: ftp modification time wrong & is ftp safe?

I use a VPN router to connect to my home network.  Then everything is available just like I'm physically on the network at home.  I use a linksys RV040.

FTP is not secure, because it transmits your username and password in plain text.  This is easily captured.
