Is it possible to mix RAID Types?
I've just bought CH3SNAS (DNS323) and 2 x 1Tb Seagate.
Is it possible to set a partition of 200 Gb in RAID 1, and the rest in JBOD?
Another question, when you update firmware, is it necessary to backup the data? any data loss risk?

The CH3SNAS and the DNS_323 are actually two different devices, from different manufacturers, with different firmware - my remarks are specific to the DNS-323
By default, whatever space is left from a RAID array will be configured as JBOD, so yes, you cancreate a 200GB RAID 1 parition and have the rest JBOD. Be prepared, however, to lose ALL of the data in the JBOD partition if a disk fails.
Strictly speaking, when you update the firmware it does not affect the data on the disks - however - if the firmware changes the disk format (1.02>1.03) or partition structure (1.03>1.04) then it could be necessary to reformat the disks. Also - with any firmware update - on any device, not just one of these, glitches happen - it's always advisable to have the data backed up - and last, but not least, RAID1 is not a form of backup.

My understanding was that both nases had same HW (ok about FW), am i correct?
Regarding the backup i agree, but i hope in next releases we dont have to reformat disks, as in Enterprise NAS systems ;-) (dreams are dreams).
Agree to that RAID1 is not a form of backup, but a protection.

Nearly, yes. DNS-323 has an Marvell 88F5181 with an external S-ATA-Chipset. On the CH3SNAS it's internal inside the Marvel 88F5182 Chip. Regarding the CH3SNAS, read more here: http://nas-tweaks.net/CH3SNAS:Hardware
