Do you shutdown unit or leave on 24/7?

I have noticed that even when both drives are spundown, there is some noise that comes from the 323. Not sure it's the fan since I can't feel any air from the rear vent. But that doens't mean it's not on. Or is the noise from the harddrives or internal circuitry of the unit? And how many users actually shut your units down overnight to try and prolong the life of the the unit and/or drives?

24/7 365 days of the year! With web and Transmission running on the unit it makes no sense shutting down, but it will be interesting to see how long the equipment lives.

Impressive. I'm trying that, too, but need to reboot (i.e. remove power plug) every once in a while because of TWSI meltdowns.

The noise is definitevely from the cooling fan. I have modded both my DNS-323, it took half an hour each and the unit is completely silent now plus the disks run cooler. I have the fan running constantly at minimum 2,500 rpm.

On 24/7 since I use it as an external backup, which runs in the middle of the night. The only thing I am missing is the automatic power on after prolonged power failure.

Off topic, but: we need to get that up! (I haven't followed the discussion thoroughly, but with a UPS and NUT can you acheive such a power on?)

I was going to do the "picaxe" mod on mine to get auto-power-up - search here and there's a thread on it.

24/7....  Actually hasn't been powered off since the day I set it up.  Been 6 months now.  No plans to power off any time soon.

24/7, because this is the main reason I buy this smile
Otherwise I buy a computer and run it as a server.

Re: Do you shutdown unit or leave on 24/7?

As we begin to use more of the 323, we will have to leave it on 24/7 as well. Now if Dlink will fix the fan spinning all the time, especially when all drives are spin down!

Do you have any instructions on how you modded them to be silent?

Re: Do you shutdown unit or leave on 24/7?

My DNS-323 has been turned on 24/7 for about 6 months, only interrupted by reconfigurations and tests. Like skydreamer, I use it for storing nightly scheduled backups.

Apart from the fan noise and additional fan wear from running 24/7, the idle power consumption is a factor as well. But compared to a conventional file server, ~10 Watts is very low.

If the noise bothers you and you don't trust small 40mm fans in the long run, you can do something like this.

It took me half an hour on each DNS323. First of all I had to cut out the plastic protection cover of the fan on the back plate to improve the airflow and then moved the fan to the other side of the metal cage i.e. to the inside between the disk bays. It is tight there but the fan fits just OK. I used rubber silencing washers under each fan mounting screw- they need to be fairly flat, I was lucky to have a few spare ones from a silencer kit for PC hard drives. Since the washers lift the base of the fan off the metal mounting plate I had to cut out some self adhesive foam and stick it to the base of the fan between the screw holes to prevent the air from leaking around the fan's base. Then I made from PC anti vibration plastic self adhesive pad a cylinder (that was very tricky to cut exactly to size) and stuck it into the hole that I initially cut out on the back plate. It acts as an air duct between the fan and the back plate thus preventing the hot air from getting to the inside of the cavity between the back plate and the metal chassis. Last modification was to drill a nice pattern of 8 holes on the front cover into the black plastic that serves as cold air inlets.

The fan is hardly audible even when running at the full speed, you can just hear swooshing of the passing air. The disk temperature dropped by a good margin. I keep the fan on at 2,200 rpm at all times- you cannot really hear it. I have to use a paper sheet to check that the fan is still working :-)

205 days, 42 hours and 27 minutes according to my Gadget smile

I am planning on building a HTPC and leave the DNS just for back up.

I have over 300gb in movies, series, music, etc

Re: Do you shutdown unit or leave on 24/7?

7x24x365

I own 2 CH3SNAS's

One of the devices, with fun_plug running, the other one not, says:

/ $ uptime
16:54:04 up 14152 days, 16:53, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.04

Seems strange because I only have the device for less than 1 year.
