ftp download slow

Hi guy's

Thanks for all the help through this forum.
I have got a 2 day old dns-323 with funplug and ffp on usb and transmission running.
Only got 1 HD installed.

I have a problem with ftp, uploading i can get a throughput off 25 mb per second.
However when i download i get only 3 mb/s is this normal?I don't have much cpu usage during ftp.
I tried disabling virus scan but this does not help.also played with jumbo pack's but no luck either.

Anny one got a clue what to do?

Re: ftp download slow

I redid my cabling and i can now download through FTP with a speed of 12mb/s.
Can anny on confirm that 12mb/s is a normal value for downloading from the dns-323 with FTP on a gigabit lan.

Re: ftp download slow

You're transferring a file - the speed at which this happens is not simply a factor of the network speed, but also the disks and systems involved - also is that mb/s megabits/second or megabytes/sec

To my desktop - 6.59MB/s, to my server - 8.90MB/sec - and that is MegaBytes/sec.

Hi thanks for your reply.
I am not saying that i should get maximum gigabit speeds from the nas.
But you must agree with me that 3 megabytes/sec on a gigabit network is slow.
However this seems to be solved by changing the utb cables.
Yust want to know how much the download speeds are from NAS to desktop on gigabit lan.
The forum is flooded with upload speeds but download speeds are hard to find.

Re: ftp download slow

I don't know where you get the idea that the forum is flooded with "upload" speeds - but I'm not going to argue.

My point is simply that when you transfer a file, the speed you get MAY be affected by other things than just the network speed - you MAY need to look at other areas besides just the network.

If your concern is just the network speeds - search the forum, you'll find a discussion on the use of Ixia's QCheck (including where to get it and how to use it) which should give results of approximately 400mbps over gigabit, for something that tests the entire file transfer path - search the forum, you'll find a utility called NASTester that creates temp files and measures the time taking to transfer those files (using SMB) - you'll also see several people have posted results of their tests with NASTester, which, by design, tests transfers in both directions.

I'd just like to point out that using SMB, the same server mentioned above delivers close to 30 MB/sec (on gigabit, with jumbo frame) using NASTester, backed up by SNMP readings from the switch.
