Intermittent problems with DNS-323

I am running firmware 1.05 and for the last week, a couple of times a day, I keep getting locked out of the NAS.

When I go to explorer I get Share not available. I log into the admin page, restart and then everything is ok again.

I have had a look on this forum and cannot find anything on this. I also got an email last night saying that both disks have failed.

Looking at the unit, both lights are flashing normally.  The NAS is on a static IP address and has been fine for about a year.

I have got two 500Gb disks running RAID 1. The admin pages give no indication that anything is wrong.

The only thing I have in the last few weeks is upgraded my Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS wireless router (running DD-WRT) to the latest firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/27/08) std - I doubt if this is the problem but you never know.

Any advice on this would be gratefully received.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Are you accessing it by name or IP address?  Probably by name...  If this is the case, add the name and ip address to your hosts file on your computer.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Thanks - I will try that. At the moment I just access it by the ip address - but you never know.

I have had a look at the known issues page and the first issue (Vista can't access after a while) sounds a similar problem. However my machine is Windows XP SP3, and the same things happens on a laptop that is XP SP2 as well as another machine that is Vista - whereas that issue noted that XP was fine.

Does it sound like a serious problem - I am half thinking of replacing it?

Cheers

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

If you are using the name of the dns, the issue is that your computer "forgets" the name because it is not broadcast but at the startup of the DNS-323.  A domain name server (DNS server) or a WINS server would log the name and store it in the table.  When your computer tries to access is, the DNS or WINS serfer would resolve the name to an ip address, allowing the computer to find the device.  Since your network most likely does not contain either of those servers, access is limited to only the amount of time you computer "remembers" the address.  By placing the address in the hosts and lmhosts file, this is polled prior to sending out for a DNS server to resolve the address.  This is actually a pretty much normal symptom on small networks.  This is why you can access by ip address, but not name, but the name works again after you reboot the DNS323.

So few words, so much information!

Your explanation is very helpful and greatly appreciated.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Hi - Just been trying to sort this problem out again. I have added the info to the Host files - but still getting intermittent loss of the network shares. When this happens though I can log into the DNS-323 with either the IP address or network name, which is odd.

As you say, the problem sounds though it is the network not the NAS. As I mentioned in the first post, I had upgraded the Linksys DD-WRT router and this has so many options something could be going amiss in there - any guidance on what I could try changing would be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your help on this

Cheers

Steve

Are you connecting wireless, or with the cable?

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

What do you mean by "network shares"?  Do you have mapped drives, or are accessing them via network manager?  When you say intermittant loss, do you mean the connection drops while transefering data, or is it not found when rying to open it up?  If you are using a mapped drive, does the drive letter disappear, or just give you an error.

There are some problems with windows network explorer that do cause it to not find other systems, so I would suggest always accessing the DNS via a mapped drive.  If this is the problem, try mapping the drive and see if it goes away.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Yes they are mapped drives - when I click on the T:\ drive it says something lost connection and something about the domain controller. Next time it happens I will post up the exact wording.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

The message is as follows:

Z:\ is not accessible

Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

When you mapped the drive, did you select "Connect using a different user name."?  There have been issues with not doing this, that windows will send the incorrect authentication to the unit and it will be denied.  If you did not do it this way, try it.

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Hi - I tried the mapping and it is still the same. Just had a look at the box earlier, and the two disk drive lights were white and the main power switch was white. I powered down and it was fine for a few hours. Had the same problem just a minute ago and the two disk drives were flashing amber and white, but the power light remained blue.

I know that amber lights is a sign of something wrong, but does anyone have any ideas about the white lights, is this really an fault or some kind of unresolved firmware issue?

Thanks

Is there a fix/hack that would have the DNS-323 occassionally rebroadcast its IP/name? Is it Samba that is responsible for that?

Thanks,
Bill...

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Just been looking at the 1.06 firmware note on the D-Link forum site, and noticed this page with people having similar issues. Sounds like it could be the firmware - so I will revert to 1.04 and see if it stops the intermittent issues. Perhaps 1.06 will solve this?

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Bumping up an old thread... I'm having the exact same issue. Here's my network setup:

Linksys wrt310N

DNS-323 connected via cable to router
PC connected via cable to router

PC running Windows XP SP3

I get sporadic timeouts/inability to access the NAS

This is especially noticeable when grabbing torrents, it'll be fine for awhile, then the NAS won't be accessible thus stopping my torrents...

I'm on FW 1.07 on the NAS, with 2x1GIG WD Black drives...

The Linksys WRT310N is running latest DD_WRT

Re: Intermittent problems with DNS-323

Hi - Just for information, I had the problem when I went from version 1.04 to 1.05. I tried all of the advice given but it still did not sort it. In the end I went back to 1.04. However, when 1.06 came out I upgraded and haven't had a problem (that has been for many months now). So perhaps version 1.07 suffers from a similar bug that was also in 1.05?

My advice would be to go back to 1.06 until this is sorted again.

Cheers

Steve
