Left light pink/purple, right light blue, both drives work.Faulty dns?

Hi, I have a 323 that is more or less brand new, with 2x 500gb Seagate barracudas installed. Unit is configured in RAID1 mirror, for use solely as a backup storage device.

Have used it, copied 50gb of data to it. Then, after 2 days or so of use, the left light is showing up as pinky/purple. It boots OK (blue) but soon goes pink (in rest mode, or once I've left it alone for awhile). Given the manual doesn't even tell you what colours mean what, I knew something was up all the same because they both started out blue.

Removed the left "offending" drive and tested it, all fine, data intact, then reinstalled it in the DNS - same thing. Pink light after a short period.

Having read through posts here, I am guessing this issue is solely with the DNS and I should return it. Seems to be a common enough problem, I just wanted to ask specifically in case I was missing something obvious (a little out of my league here guys, no experience with NAS before or anything like this).

Any comments appreciated! Thanks for running this forum.

Re: Left light pink/purple, right light blue, both drives work.Faulty dns?

Sorry to follow up my own thread, I just telephoned dlink Australia tech support, and they said to update to 1.05fw then try it again; if the problem persists they will replace it.

I also correct my earlier post; what the colours should be is actually written on a page of the manual I skipped, and also on the bottom of the unit... :-S. Clearly I'm no pro.

Also to clarify, I swapped the "failed" disk for the "working" one, and the lights still indicated failure on the left, even though this was the "working" drive.

Cheers!

What does the web interface say under status?  If it says degraded, several people have gotten around this issue by manually telnetting into the unit, then using mdadm to remove the drive from the raid array, then add it back in.  It is relatively simple process.

DNS-323     F/W: 1.04b84  H/W: A1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 400 GB Seagate SATA-300
DNS-323     F/W: 1.05b28  H/W: B1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 1 TB  WD SATA-300
DSM-G600   F/W: 1.02       H/W: B                Drive:  500 GB WD ATA

Re: Left light pink/purple, right light blue, both drives work.Faulty dns?

bq041, I followed their instructions and updated the firmware to 1.05 and have been testing the sync before commencing a full-fledged backup. In the process I installed two new 500gb drives to prevent any accidental formatting during the firmware update. There have been no new amber/purple lights since, but I just logged in now and it says under 'status' "Sync Time Remaining:  Degraded" - is this what you meant? Does this mean a problem remains with my DNS-323? Thanks

This is exactly what I meant.  It means theat the array is not intact.  You can use telnet to go in and use mdadm to tell which drive is out of the array, then you can manually add it in.  Do a google search for "man mdadm" to find out the commands for mdadm.
