Long time reader first time poster.
Ok, so I have DNS-323 with 2, 1.0tb samsung spinpoint drives in standard mode.
I mostly filled the drives with 1080p HD videos in h.264 (mkv container). They all average about 10mbits per second, or just over 1 MB/s.
I have Fonz funplug 0.5 installed, with transmission, and secure shell.
My problem: Constant stuttering of HD videos when accessed through SMB share. They play silky smooth when accessed from a internal harddrive. I've seen file transfer speeds up to 15MB/s (gigabit LAN), so why can't SMB successfully stream videos with a bitrate of around only around 1MB/s? (yes, I stop transmission when streaming) Is this a problem with just me, or am i not alone?
Note: low bitrate SD videos play just fine from SMB share.
I am using Windsws Vista, and have tried various media players, WMP, KMPLAYER, VLC, WMP classic. All work fine with the same content on internal hardrives, but they choke through SMB.
I decided to give NFS a hook. I installed UNFS included in FFP, setup the server and EXPORT file with the IP of my Vista computer. But i can't get the Vista NFS client to work. Vista's built in NFS client wants "Unix" account identitities mapped to Windows accounts, it insists that this is done from Active Directory, or a User Name Mapping Server, i have neither.
So, should SMB work for high bitrate HD movies? If yes, what could be going wrong with my setup?
If no, should i use NFS? If so, how can i get Vista to map a NFS share?
Anyone with experience on these issues?

I have the same setup as you and it all works fine.
I use mpc hc to play them, with the internal matroska splitter i get stutters.
With the internal splitter disaled and when i use the matroska splitter all works fine.

Wow, thanks.. that worked!
I knew it couldn't of been a SMB bottleneck.
BTW, i just moved to 4000 byte Jumbo frames, and I got a noticable improvement on file transfers.

Mine worked for a long time^_^.
And trust me, don't enable jumbo frames only if you know exactly how it works. (hardware, software, cables...)

What's there to know? I enabled 4k jumbo on my 323, and enabled it on my gigabit card. They are both the sole devices on my Gigabit switch (which supports jumbo frames). All my other (non jumbo) devices are on my router. I used CAT5e cable, and tested the link with 4000 byte pings.
Its working well, and i'm seeing a noticable speed improvement.
