Is it possible to merge a JBOD with a RAID1?

Hi everybody!

When I bought my DNS-323 with two 500 Gb drives two years ago, I created one ~ 400gb RAID1 partition and one ~ 90 Gb JBOD partition.
Here's a printout of my partition table:

Code:

Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/ram0 9.7M 7.5M 1.7M 81% /
/dev/md0 412.4G 353.2G 59.3G 86% /mnt/HD_a2
/dev/md1 91.1G 2.3M 91.1G 0% /mnt/HD_b2
/dev/sdc1 7.4G 882.0M 6.2G 12% /mnt/HD_a2/usbstorage
/dev/sdc1 7.4G 882.0M 6.2G 12% /mnt/HD_a2/sdc1

As you see I haven't so must space left on my RAID1. Since now I nevered really used the JBOD partition. Is there a safe way to remove the JBOD partition and add the free space to my existing RAID1? By doing so I would have more time left before switching to two 1 tg drives ...

BTW: Why is the usb stick I'm using for funplug 0.5 is mounted two times and where can I remove the second entry?

BR,

JackShepard

Edit: I solved the problem with the usb stick by myself. There was a start-usbstick.sh Script in /ffp/start which wasn't needed anylonger ...

Re: Is it possible to merge a JBOD with a RAID1?

The answer is yes, but it is a little difficult.  Since the DNS used different partitions for the RAID1 array and the JBOD array, those need to be combined.  If you have growfs (which I doubt), you could delete partition 3 on each drive, then expand partition 2 (where the raid1 info is stored).  Since that is not the case, it involves breaking the arrays, repartitioning and formatting one of the disks, copying the data over, repartitioning and formatting the other disk, recreating the RAID1, then updating the configuration files so the DLink F/W is happy.  It has a lot involved if you really want to do it.  (BTW, even if you get growfs, the config files still need to be changed.)

Mhhh, you're right. The procedure seems to be a little difficult but safe. I don't really know how the software RAID inside the DNS-323 is really organized and I don't want to loose data. Could you provide my a more detailed step-by-step explaination? Isn't it another solution to change the partition using a Gparted-live CD?

Re: Is it possible to merge a JBOD with a RAID1?

Regardless of how you change the partition, the config files on the DNS will require updating in 4 places (each drive and 2 flash modules).  I see you have 353 GB of data.  Do you have someplace to back the data up?  I can provide details of how to do it, but some of the information I need in order to tell you the next step will require you to have already completed some of the steps.  This make it a drawn out process, and I wil be out of town for a couple of weeks.  How good are your linux skills?

Right now, your easiest bet is to backup the data, use the web utility to setup the RAID1 how you want it, then copy the data back.  Below is a link to a script I wrote that repartitions the drives and recreated the raid1 for an update in F/W from 1.03 to 1.04/5.  If you move your JBOD data over to the RAID volume and remove the JBOD partition, then the script may work straight up for you.  I have not tested it without changing F/W (it has a couple of protections).  If you are good with linux, you can modify it how you need.  I tried to comment it enough so it could be followed easily.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Is it possible to merge a JBOD with a RAID1?

Hi bq041!

Because my 250 gb notebbok harddisk is nearly full, i'm planing to upgrade to a bigger 500 gb hard disk at the end of this month. So I will have a backup drive for some days. How exactly can I copy back the data after recreating the RAID1? (I mean if format the two disk funplug and the usb driver is gone) ...

Re: Is it possible to merge a JBOD with a RAID1?

If you can backup your data, then after you format the drives, just copy the data back on.  You can use windows if you wish.  I'm not really following your question.  Are you planning on using your new notebook drive for backup?
