Unable to rename folders, but able to rename files

I have a DNS323 and an xp laptop. I have recently reformatted the pc, restored factory settings and reformatted the dns. I reloaded my data on the dns323 and continue to have problems with it.
When I try to rename a folder it tells me it is locked and refuses to rename it. If I release the mapping and re map with the dlink easy search utility the problem goes away - for a while. then returns. If I remap without the disc, via the windows xp funtionality, the error does not go away. I have checked the lock with an unlocker program and it tells me there are no handles on the folder. When I check the folder permissions there is a green square in the read only property. If I uncheck this the problem remains.
I am able to rename files.
I have shut off all the other servers on the DNS and have not set up any user groups or permissions, only set the workgroup.
If I navigate to the network via the workgroup, I can't change the names. If I map the folders via the dlink program, I can.
Under the workgroup, the properties of the dns computer is listed as windows NT4.9 server. Is this right? I thought it was a linux unit.
It sounds similar to an unresolved post I found earlier.

Any thoughts? Thanks,

Re: Unable to rename folders, but able to rename files

First, it is a Linux maching and do not try to do any configuring or viewing of settings from the Windows property box, they will be wrong and can cause problems if changed.  When you map from windows, do you use the "Connect using a different user name: link, or just wait for a prompt for the name and password.  Try using the "Connect using..." link.  There are some know issues with Windows when this is not used.  The next thing you can do is to telnet into the DNS and check the permissions on the directories in question.  Once you have that information, you can change them appropriately.

Re: Unable to rename folders, but able to rename files

Hi bq,
Thanks for the reply.
I think I have solved my problem. I have replaced/upgraded my router and reconfigured the network adaptor on my laptop. Everything seems OK now, very stable. Much relieved. Not sure which was causing the problem. My guess is that the ethernet card was not configured correctly and arguing with the router. Anyway, seems to be OK now and I can get on with my life! Many thanks, smile
