DNS 323 with two 1TB WD Green Hard drives or two 1 TB WD 7200 HD

Hi,

The Western Digital 1TB Green Hard drive spins at 5400 rpm which saves you energy.  If I was to plug two 1TB WD green hard drives into the NAS unit how much more performance decrease will I get compare to the regular WD 1TB 7200 RPM drives?

I doubt you'll see any perceptible difference if you are looking at it from the perspective of a shared drive over the network.  Even with 1 GB ethernet, the disks can deliver data faster than the DSN-323 CPU & TCP/IP stack can deliver it to the client.

That said,  I considered the WD Green vs. the Caviar Black drives and picked the Caviar Black drives.  The way I figured it, my NAS drives are not accessed constantly and spend a lot of time in spin-down mode where they don't use much power anyway.  I set my DNS to spin down the disks after 10 minutes of inactivity.

DNS-323 (H/W ver. B1) |  2 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black (Raid 1) | Corsair Flash Voyager - 16 GB USB | FW 1.08 | fun_plug 0.5

You shouldn't see any performance difference. GP drives are perfect candidates for a SOHO NAS solution.

I have a CH3SNAS with two 1GB WD GP drives, they run perfect here and i get great results. Jesbo is right.
