Individual disk to RAID1 set up. Reformat everything?

I have a DNS 323 with 1 disk in it - I wanted to add another later and have them in a RAID 1 array.

I noticed the DNS 323 would not allow me to select RAID 1 (presumably only having detected one disk). Does this mean I will have to re-select RAID1 and format BOTH disks when I add the second disk?

I was hoping to run it in degraded mode till I added the second disk.

I'd prefer not to have to re-format the disk in there currently (as it has 700gb or so of data on it).

Re: Individual disk to RAID1 set up. Reformat everything?

Assuming you're running fw 1.05, when you add the second disk - IF it is the same size or larger than the first disk - you will have the option of creating a RAID1 array by checking a box in the format page.  The unit should format the new disk and then synchronize the array.

I would suggest you back up the data before installing the second disk.

Thank you fordem. I wasn't sure if since it was RAID1 both disks needed to be formatted at the same time.

I'll be using the same model HDD just from a different batch so that's cool. I'll back the data up first cheers smile
