You have the line:
test ! -f $exports
and if not present you go ahead and create a new one, overwriting whatever is there.
Problem is that this will overwrite a link (which I like to put there to alternative /etc/export options).
Any chance of changing this to a more "friendly" and less "clobbering" -e or -r?
