Help: can't configure

Hi...

Just bought the DNS-323 two days ago, and I have problem configuring it!

The Easy Search Utility can detected my device (installed with a Seagate 1TB drive).

However, as soon as I click on the device, the configuration and language buttons got greyed out. Thus, I cannot access the drive, format it or doing anything with it.

I'd tried it on two systems: 1) Windows XP with SP1; 2) Windows XP with SP2 and both give the same results. I'd tried downloaded and running an older version of Easy Search Utility and still the same thing happens.

What can I do?

can you access the configuration directly by typing the ip address in a browser? Everything the easy utility does can be done manually. The utility justs presents a GUI to do it in

yup. Tried accessing via IP address thru' a browser. Page cannot be found. Just need to typed in "192.168.0.32" right? Did a search using windows explorer for computer 192.168.0.32 too, but nothing found.

If I'm not mistaken the default is DHCP - so chances are the DNS-323 is not at 192.168.0.32.

Turn it off using the front panel button, turn it back on and as soon as the button stops flashing, check your router's attached devices list for an entry with a MAC address mathching that of your DNS-323 (it should be on the bottom) and try that address in the browser.

What if I didn't connect it to a router, but directly to the laptop/ desktop?

The Dlink Support guys ask me to change the PC's IP Address to be in the subnet of the DNS-323. However, they didn't really tell me how I can do that.

Followed the instruction given on the bottom of the DNS-323, access via http://dlink-xxxxxx (where xxxxxx = mac address last 6 digits) doesn't help also. sad

If you didn't connect it to a router - or other DHCP server - it would default to an address of 192.168.0.32 - and should be accessible from a computer configured to a static address in the same range - right click the network adapter, select properties, select tcp/ip and then click properties.

With regard the last post - there are no instructions on the bottom of my DNS-323 so I have no idea what you're referring to, but trying to access the DNS-323 via http using the unit's default name is - to my mind - not the best of ideas.

can you ping it?

Start > Run > cmd

in the command window type

ping 192.168.0.32 and see if you get a reply. If not then the ip of the DNS-323 is not the default.

Thanks fordem and roadkyng for both your suggestions & help.

Finally, I'm able to access the DNS 323 via the IP address found thru' the router connected devices, which is not the default 192.168.0.32
Now I'm formatting the HDD. Next is to learn / figure out how I can access it thru' both my laptop (windows based) and my iMac directly to the HDD. smile

The best thing you can do so you can find it is to set the ip address static on the DNS.  From the sounds of your description, the DNS is getting one assigned by dhcp from the router.  The dns only goes tot he default 192.168.0.32 if there is no dhcp server.  By setting static, you avaoid having the address change on you.

That would depend on how you define "router range".

Most residential networks use a class c network address range - which allows up to 254 hosts - for example 192.168.0.1~192.168.0.254.  You need to use an address with that network range to communicate with the DNS-323, so no, you cannot use an ip address outside of the network address range.

Some routers use that entire range for DHCP and some don't - those that don't will typically use the last 154 addresses for the DHCP lease pool - for example 192.168.0.101~192.168.0.254, in which case you can (and should) use an address between 2 and 100 (192.168.0.2~192.168.0.100), so that it is outside of the router's DHCP lease pool.

Just in case you're curious as to why I started with 2 (192.168.0.2) - in most cases the router is at 1 (192.168.0.1) - this is not mandatory, I have seen one manufacturer who prefers to use .254 (192.168.0.254).

So which "router range" were you referring to?

My router range pool is say 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.1.254. I reduced the pool range to 154.
set the 323 to an IP address of 192.168.1.155?

That should work fine - however - if the router was already excluding the .2~.100 range (this is known as an exclusion range) you could just as easily have selected a static address in that range, rather than further reducing the DHCP lease pool.

Assuming that your network will never have more than 53 hosts (154-101), you should be just fine.

I'm currently simply running a  single NAS box with the above IP method.

Am considering getting a 323 using similar ip setup as my current nas box. If I decide to stop using my current single box, I am thinking of giving the 323 the same ip address.

Leebros,

As a noob to DNS 323 and just two weeks into using it I can tell you that the most common problem with access from other PC's has been firewalls.  Zone alarm in particular gave me a lot of grief even after setting the NAS address in the trusted zone.  I suggest next time you try to set up access from your lap top that you disable temporarily any firewall to prevent any blocking.  After ensuring the link works you can run the firewall and see what happens.

Thanks Alabamaeee for your advise.

I've no problem accessing the device from both iMac and windows based laptop after knowing the correct IP address. The problem I faces now is the printer server function. Although my printer was detected and listed by the DNS 323, and my iMac can view and print to "lp" of the DNS-323, nothing physically was printed. I can view the print queue, and the document was "printed" or "completed". It looks as if everything runs smoothly; no error message at all. But physically, the printer was not printing.

I really dun know why. Btw, my printer is a multifunction printer (samsung clx-2160). sad
