Firmware upgrade with pulled drive?

I'm running standard 1.03 software with two Seagate 500 Gig drives in a RAID-1 format.  I have a current backup on an external drive.  I'm wondering if the following procedure would be a valid method of safely upgrading firmware to 1.05 without having to endure a drive format?  The warnings on DLINK's upgrade instructions are driving this question.  I would prefer to be able to upgrade without having to restore my data.

1. Power down DNS-323 and pull drive from left bay.
2. Power up, perform firmware upgrade with only right drive in place.  (I am assuming RAID-1 settings are preserved on the DNS even though a drive is unplugged - right or wrong?)
3. Verify data on right drive is intact.
4. Power down, re-insert drive in left bay and power on.  Assume synchronization is performed or checked?
5. Pray - then verify data is intact and RAID-1 configuration is active.

Will this work?  I've read many posts regarding unavoidable reformatting when adding new drives, changing drive sizes, or changing drive format.  I'm not really doing any of those things - unless the DNS changes my settings RAID-1 setting when it powers up with a missing drive.

Your thoughts on this will be appreciated.

Re: Firmware upgrade with pulled drive?

Here is the thing.  If nothing goes wrong at all, the unit will continue to work without formatting, but only for a limited time.  The partition structure is different between F/W 1.03 and the newer ones.  I reccommend upgrading to keep the integrity.

I did write a script that will do it without losing the data you have on the drives currently.  Look at post #15 from this thread: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t2444-Wiza … -1.05.html

DNS-323     F/W: 1.04b84  H/W: A1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 400 GB Seagate SATA-300
DNS-323     F/W: 1.05b28  H/W: B1  ffp: 0.5  Drives: 2X 1 TB  WD SATA-300
DSM-G600   F/W: 1.02       H/W: B                Drive:  500 GB WD ATA

Re: Firmware upgrade with pulled drive?

Thanks bq401 - I read the thread - it looks great.  I am running stock code, so will need to venture into the land of funplug before upgrading.  I appreciate your response and the extended effort you put into the script!
