I am SOOOOO happy they are adding PS3 support.   I am SOOOOOO happy!  I hope it works.

I'm really stoked for the Xbox 360 support!  That'll be awesome.

So how would the new firmware run UPS support? ie. how will the unit know when to shut down during a power outage?

Most likely just like the DNS-343, via a USB cable between the UPS and the DNS-323.

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

So will this new firmware support running the two HD in the device separately (i.e. not mirrored) with automatic copying of the contents of one to the other...?

Or will such functionality require fun_plug...?

thanks!

Local copy & management of files would be a fantastic feature. Let's hope it's there. Really, now sure why this is not a standard feature to begin with!

I actaully hope it's not actually. Most UPS's only have 1 USB plug to do the monitoring and that is usually reserved for the server / desktop. Let's hope there is some sort of network support that allows Vista to shutdown the NAS during battery operation of the server / desktop.

Your statement is either unclear or you have misunderstood this function. The UPS serves the NAS with power during an outage. When the UPS reaches its limitation (battery low) it signals the USB connected NAS to shutdown gracefully before the battery is depleted, hence preventing disk damage. If this also incorporates a startup when the power is up again, I don't know.

If you are trying to say that you want to use the same UPS for both one NAS and a PC, and have one or both shut down on low UPS battery, you may be out of luck.

By the way. I am using the APC BACK-UPS ES 400VA to power my DNS-323, Linksys WRT54GL router, Zyxel TriplePlay 660H modem & Linksys DGS1005D switch. The setup was running for 48 minutes before the UPS started beeping! Unfortunately it does not have a USB so I won't be able to use the UPS support anyway.

Most UPS support software (including NUT, which I believe is used in the new firmware) supports the client/server concept in which the UPS software can act as a server to provide UPS "signalling" to network clients using similar software to shut them down - or - act as a client to shutdown the device when signalled by a similar software acting in server mode.

Some manufacturers may not provide this as standard, but charge extra - if I'm correct APC's PowerChute Personal Edition does not have it, but their Power Chute Business Edition does.

I'm - so to speak - anxiously awaiting the release of the new firmware for this feature - and no, it will not allow a restart, not because the software doesn't, but because the DNS-323 hardware can't do it.

By the way - it is NOT advisable to run your UPS to battery depletion - not unless your aim is to keep UPS & battery manufacturers in business - I would strongly suggest that you save your work and shut your system down within the first 5~10 minutes, even if the UPS has the capability to run for 48 minutes - your wallet will thank you.

I was unaware of this, thanks for explaining.

I did it only for the benchmark, I haven't had an outage since last summer when I purchased it so it's rarely in use.

RTG20 and mealto,

You can backup incrementally from one location to another already using the box without fun-plugging:

Use the FTP server, then set up scheduled downloads from the admin page, and you can do an incremental backup from folder 1 to folder 2.
These folders can be on which ever disk you want.

Hope this helps.

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

Dumb newbie question - does this mean that with the soon-to-be-released firmware I can get a cheapo XBOX 360 (arcade version ?) to play HD (H.264, X.264, DivX, etc) content over HDMI ?

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

Whoa...  I don't have firmware 1.06, but after installing the NXE on my Xbox 360, it's suddenly able to see the DNS-323 on my network!  There's some weird stuff going on (some directories are totally messed), but I'm definitely able to play some content from the unit with no change in my setup (other than the new dashboard).

Anyone else notice this?

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

I saw a post on the DNS-321 Dlink Forum from user "D-Link Multimedia" (a Dlink Forum Moderator)
that *might* be helpful for people having problems trying to stream content from DNS-323 to Xbox360.

original post (requires registration) http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2933.30

D-Link Multimedia@Dlink Forum wrote:

Thought I had made a post on this yesterday but must have not clicked send. If any of you are having problems
with playing content on the Xbox 360 even though you can see the content in the list you may be experiencing a bug.
Currently if the third octet of your Ip address is 0, ie, 192.168.0.X, the DNS-321 will not stream content to your Xbox
360. This will be fixed next firmware however at the current time the only solution is to change network IP schemes to
something like 192.168.1.X until a firmware release is published. Sorry for any inconvience for those of you experiencing this.

I just hit "My Videos", and DNS-323 is one of the options I can select.

It only works when your computer is on and connected to the network. If you can link to your drive via a named drive, you can turn on Media Sharing in WMP or Zune and it'll see your drive. But only when your computer is turned on.

When WHAT computer is on?  My computer's off (not that it's linked to anything anyways), and I can see the DNS-323 in My Videos in the menu of my NXE Xbox 360.

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

The 1.06 on the Australian D-Link Site is a b62.
The latest Beta posted by Tilly is a b65...

I compared both binaries and there a huge differences.

When Tilly's changelog is correct at least this important improvement is missing...
(I guess noone using UPNP or I-Tunes Server wants thet the HDD runs 24x7.)

v.106b65    12/03/2008
1.PM Improvement : When no file accessing is performed, HDD is able to sleep even if iTunes Server and UPnP AV Server are being enabled.

Maybe Tilly can give some comments on that and which of the 2 versions he recommend to install.

cheers,
keule

Here i am. wink

In the moment I use the version 1.06b65. There is no reason for me to use an older version like the 1.06b62.

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

PS3 Support does not work for me:
I'm sseing the DNS323 in the PS3 and I'm able to select "Audio", but then no further browsing is possible.
DB has ~2800+ mp3 songs... The PS3 reports a DLNA error 2114 (or something...).

Anyone tested with the PS3 yet?

What changes for the PS3 support in there? Will it handle streaming audio from the DNS-323 now or do we still need to do the Twonky thing?

Re: FW 1.06 nearly official - change list released

Twonky still works way better when streaming videos and music to my D-Link DSM510 mediaplayer (kind of strange) and with my Soundbridge for music.. so with 1.06b65 i'll continue with fun plug and twonky.. 2 years after release of a product and with several firmwares they still cant make the builtin UPnP server work OK with D-Link UPnP mediaplayer.
