Help. Adding new drive. Started with one drive on wrong side

Hey all....I would appreciate some clarification on this if anybody knows...

I got a DNS-323 about a year ago...And incorrectly started with only one drive on the left side (when looking from the front)...From reading various posts on this forum, I know I should have just put the one drive on the right side.  Now, I'd like to add a second drive, and I'm wondering what the safest route to adding the second drive would be?  Should I power down, remove the current one from the wrong slot, put in the new one, go to the web admin page and format it, power down again, and then finally re-install my first one in the correct (right side) slot?  That's what I've managed to piece together from various threads.  This seems like the safest way to make sure that the thing doesn't accidentally format the wrong drive with all my stuff on it.  I'm running firmware 1.04 BTW.  And since I've already installed a fun pack, shouldn't I make sure to include that on the drive that is placed in SLot 1?

Anyways, I think I have all this right...Just would appreciate it if those with more experience could chime in and let me know if I'm off base on any of this.

Re: Help. Adding new drive. Started with one drive on wrong side

I screwed up 300 gigz of files harxdly recovered from an ntfs partition doing the same mistake as you.
I understood that troubles gets generated when you insert an additional drive in the empty left slot.
So, imho, it is sufficent to powerdown the unit, remove the disk, and put it on the right side, leaving the left empty.
Power up, verify that things are ok, the power down.
After this, add the new hdd in the left slot, so you have all the slot busy, and powerup, and format it.
It would be nice to backup before, but space is the problem, uh ?
