Vista Woes

I have my DNS-323 working with Vista to the point that I can see all my files.  (Infuriating that such a simple thing like that is a battle.  Why hasn't Microsoft or DLink made this easier?  Editing the registry?   Security Policies?  Just to use a NAS in 2008?  Was just plug-n-play with good old XP.)  But what I still *can't* do is execute applications form the 323.  I have searched far and wide, but can't figure out why I'm getting an error, "The specified windows password is not correct," when opening up apps.  The password, FWIW, is certainly correct.  I can view docs no problem, just can't run any apps off the 323--I have to copy them to the vista machine and run from there.  Why am I running apps off the 323?  Well, mostly just installers, but that's where I save all such files, so everything I install comes from the 323.  It's just insane that this doesn't work and I have spent a dozen hours trying to figure it out.

This may not be the answer you want to hear however; I had the same problem and solved it through installation of ffp and configuration of SAMBA with the following

    security = USER
    hosts deny = ALL
    hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
    client NTLMv2 auth = Yes
