Hello all,
Have had my 323 and have lurked for about half a year now. I appreciate all the help I have received from this forum!
My question is why do we have to backup our data when we do something as simple as a firmware upgrade because there might be possibility of losing data? Also, I see people saying if people are upgrading, they should reformat their drives when upgrading firmware.
This just seems very silly to me. When I do firmware upgrades on products such as all our networking equipment, I don't need to worry about destroying my configuration or files saved on the device. Will this ever be resolved? Or will this need to be done everytime? Thank you in advance for your time.

Yes, you have to backup your data to protect it from the possibility of loss, but you only need backup the data you can't afford to loose.

This situation is caused by the way D-Link implements the enhancements in a specific firmware.
Some firmware revisions have changed the way the partitions are laid out on the disks, or the
files system types (ext3, ext2) available. Other enhancements, such as international characters,
also require changes to the hard disk file systems. These enhancements mandate formatting the hard disks.
Nobody knows if this will ever change. D-Link's official "cover your butt" position is to recommend backup of
data and reformat of disks. Some people have been successful with firmware upgrades without backup and reformat,
other have not. Since the firmware upgrade behavior you will encounter, in you particular situation, can not be
predicted with absolute certainty, the most prudent thing to do is backup and reformat.... or just don't upgrade at all.
