323 suitability re large lossless iTunes library

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting a DNS-323 with 2x Western Digital Green Power 1TB drives (probably striped as all files will be backed up to DVD anyway or at least on another PC).  I will be using the NAS for file serving, the iTunes server and sharing photos over the UPnP server.

My question is mainly relating to the iTunes server.  I have an itunes library made up of Apple Lossless files which will eventually contain around 10-20,000 files (and therefore I estimate a few hundred GB).  Is this unit capable of handling this size of library using it's built in iTunes server (and be responsive enough to be usable!)?  Usually only one user (at most 2/3) will access this library at the same time.  If not, is there other software that I could install on the unit that would handle it with the 323's hardware.

Also, I have a PS3 and Xbox 360 I'd like to stream photos to over the media server.  Again, I have a collection of a few thousand photos which is constantly growing (mainly quite large files from a Canon digital SLR in JPG format) - is the unit capable of this again from a performance point of view (360 or PS3 is fine, so long as one works!).

All devices will be wired to the NAS (other than a laptop which will be file sharing only with perhaps the odd iTunes browse).

Thanks for any help/comments.

Re: 323 suitability re large lossless iTunes library

1) As far as the disk setup, I would not go the route of striping the drives.  There is no performance gain and if 1 drive goes, all the data goes.  Even with a backup, the amount of data you are talking about would be very time consuming to restore.  If it were me, I would use 2 individual disks and if you really need the info in 1 location, I would mount the second drive to a directory on the first, so it is all visable from the first.

2) As for the iTunes server.  I personally do not use this, but I have seen numerous accounts on the forum of problems with the built in server.  Other than that I can offer no comments on it.

3) I do use mine for watching movies on my popcorn hours (multiple).  I use ffp 0.5 and NFS for access.  Of course, I am running a fun_plug on the popcorn hours, also.

Thanks for the info. Won't bother striping then!

Would firefly or twonky run a library that large on the 323?

just a quick final question regarding Firefly - does Firefly affect the power saving functionality at all? Will it still work properly (disks spin down).

Re: 323 suitability re large lossless iTunes library

Hi,

From what I read earlier it seems folks are using Twonky to stream audio/video from the DNS-323 to the PS3. I just want to stream audio (mp3) from it to my PS3 should I want to. I can see it but can't see any files on it. I'm fairly current on the firmware (I think I went to 1.05 recently) but that didn't help.  What is firefly? I'll do a google search to see what it is/costs. I was hoping 1.06 will fix the PS3 streaming problem.....anyone know if this works ok now? I have 2 500Gb Samsungs in RAID 1 configuration in it. I don't leave it on all the time either (vibration gets annoying when in the same room...I usually give it it touch-foot treatment and it quiets down...hahaha).
