Is it somehow possible to read the content of the drives via USB?
For example, I have a Western Digital Media Player that requires an external HD via a USB port. Instead of constantly switching the external hd between pc/wd player, I wanted to have the following set up:
PC ->(eth)-> NAS ->(usb)-> WD Player --(is this somehow possible?) I want to be able to refill an external hd without disconnecting it from the WD player.

No - out of the box it's not - and whilst I don't think it's impossible to achieve, it will certainly require some custom programming.
First there are two types of USB devices - let's call them a USB host and a USB peripheral - the USB host is a controller, a PC, the DNS-323, and your media player - a USB peripheral would be the device that you attach to the host - a printer, a web camera, a scanner, and external USB drive.
You are trying to connect two USB hosts together - it can be done, there are adapters designed for this and intended to let you connect two computers so that you can transfer files - if you used one of those, and created the drivers to use it with the DNS-323, then yes, you could probably do it.
There are other network disks that allow you to use the USB port to connect it to a computer - it might be an easier solution that hacking the DNS-323 to make it do what you want.

About the network drives with usb host, are there any budget ones available or should we just buy a NMT?
