Update Raid 1 disks to a larger capacity disks.

I tried to find this question within the forums to no avail, if it has been asked...feel free to point to the original post.

I am successfully running v1.06 of the firmware on the 323 with two WD 500gb hard drives in Raid 1/mirrored configuration. I want to replace those two disks with larger capacity Samsung 640gb drives and move the data to them.

What is the best way to update the drives in the 323 and move the data contained?

Is it possible to

1) Remove one (1) of the current existing lower capacity hard drives and place one larger capacity drive into the system and have the system mirror the data to the new drive after its internal format? Will the larger capacity drive keep its size, so that when the operation is complete I can simply replace the final original drive with the new larger drive and finish the process. Or does the format of the 323 process short the drive to the smallest drive size, in this case 640 to 500?

Or do I have to

2) Remove the old drives, put in the new drives. Install one of the old HDs on a sata system and copy the files over?

advTHANKSance

Re: Update Raid 1 disks to a larger capacity disks.

1) Raid 1 will only be the size of the smallest drive.  You have to do option 2.
