dns 323 question

hi to all!

I am contemplating on buying a dns 323 with 2 - 500GB Seagate hard disk. But I still need to clarify something such as:

1. Can I still used the RAID1 setup even if I install chroot debian?
2. I assumed the chroot debian will be installed in the hard disk, is it possible to install it in usb flash drive so that the 2 drive will be complete data only?
3. does the RAID technology used employ hardware or software raid?
4. does Raid setup is reliable?
5. what's the typical setup you made in your dns 323?

many thanks,

Re: dns 323 question

1. Yes
2. Yes and no. You can chroot Debian from an USB drive, with some tricks, but you harddisks will not be data only. You'll need to install the fun_plug and software to mount the USB drive here.
3. It's software. But it's only mirroring, so the cpu doesn't have to do much.

Re: dns 323 question

I have no special opinion about the reliability of the dns323-raid1. I think it's as reliable as any raid1. I don't own a dns323, but my 2-drive nas has a raid1 setup. If I had to setup it again, (and maybe I'll do it anyway, soon) I'd choose for 2 volumes, using a rsync incremental backup from the 'work' volume to the 'backup' volume, as described here.
The problem with raid1 is that it doesn't protect you against accidentally deleted data. A backup does.

I'm not confident with RAID1 so I setup standart drive for both volume and have backup for more security. I use a third HDD in my PC for the most sensible data to make sure I have a solid backup I can recover even if my NAS broke. For sur I loose the instant data access in the eventuality of on NAS HDD failure. It's a matter of priority : instant access or absolute security !
